Background and Aims Fatty liver increases oxidative stress and may trigger antioxidant mechanisms. We aimed to compare the levels of vitamin D, which has antioxidant properties, as well as total oxidant status (TOS), total antioxidant status (TAS), and catalase between patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) and the control group. Methods We compared vitamin D, TOS, TAS, catalase levels, and other biochemical parameters between pediatric patients with ultrasonographically detected NAFL and an age-matched healthy control group. Results NAFL patients had a significantly lower vitamin D level (p < 0.001). The patient group also had significantly greater height, weight, body mass index (BMI) Z score, parathyroid hormone, triglyceride, glucose, antioxidant (TAS and catalase), and TOS levels compared to the controls (p ≥ 0.001). There was no significant difference between the obese and non-obese NAFL patients with respect to TAS, TOS, catalase levels, and other biochemical parameters (p < 0.05). There was a positive correlation between height, weight, BMI Z score, and hepatosteatosis grade, and TAS, TOS, and catalase levels, and a negative correlation with vitamin D level. We also found a negative correlation between vitamin D level and TOS and catalase level. Conclusions Our study revealed lower levels of vitamin D and higher levels of oxidant-antioxidants including TOS, TAS, and catalase in patients with NAFL.

Introduction: The grayling ( L.) has several advantages over other fish species that make it attractive for aquaculture and invest it with importance for food security. The study assessed the effects of a β-glucan-enriched diet on biomarkers of oxidative stress, energy metabolism and lysosomal function in muscle tissue of European grayling ( L.

Preserving the nutritional value of honey without compromising its properties until consumption is crucial. However, different types of honey may respond differently to packaging and storage conditions. This study aimed to assess the effects of different packaging materials (tin cans, light-colored glass jars, and dark-colored glass jars) and storage durations (initial, 6 months, and 12 months) on the physicochemical and antioxidant properties of pine, flower, and thyme honey.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study involved 30 female rats divided into groups receiving various treatments, measuring changes in oxidative stress and inflammation markers, along with histopathological analysis.
  • * Results showed that BER reduced the harmful effects of 5-FU on the ovaries by enhancing antioxidant levels and lowering markers of oxidative stress, inflammation, and cell death, suggesting it could help protect ovarian function.

Background/aims: Lead exposure is known to induce oxidative stress and neurotoxicity. Nitric oxide (NO) plays an important role in modulating oxidative stress, with L-arginine as a precursor of NO and N-nitro-L-arginine (L-NNA) as an inhibitor of NO synthase, an enzyme that catalyses the production of nitric oxide (NO) from L-arginine.

Methods: This study investigated the differential effects of L-arginine and L-NNA on markers of oxidative stress and biochemical changes in brain tissue from rats with different levels of resistance to hypoxia exposed to lead nitrate.

In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the effect of seminal plasma activity levels of enzymatic antioxidants such as catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), non-enzymatic antioxidant alpha-tocopherol (Vit-E), and also total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), and oxidative stress index (OSI) on post-thaw sperm quality. As well as it was aimed to investigate the possibility of the use of OSI as a marker for the estimation of bull semen freezability. For this study, 72 ejaculates were collected from 6 bulls and separated into two aliquots.
