Sci Rep

December 2024

Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Medicine, Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Medicine and Engineering, University of Yamanashi, 1110 Shimokato, Chuo, Yamanashi, 409-3898, Japan.

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) sensitization and allergic rhinitis (AR) symptoms in school-aged children in Japan and to understand the current severity of AR symptoms and the quality of life (QOL) among children with AR. We analyzed data from 8-year-old children who participated in the Yamanashi Adjunct Study of the Japan Environment and Children's Study, focusing on those with complete information on specific IgE levels and AR (1229 for perennial AR [PAR] and 1196 for seasonal AR [SAR]). Sensitization was determined when allergen-specific IgE levels were class 2 (0.

Early infancy is a critical period for immune development. In addition to being the primary food source during early infancy, human milk also provides multiple bioactive components that shape the infant gut microbiome and immune system and provides a constant source of exposure to maternal microbiota. Given the potential interplay between allergic diseases and the human microbiome, this study aimed to characterise the milk microbiome of allergic mothers.

The relationship between air pollution exposure and non-allergic rhinitis (NAR) risk in children is underexplored and uncertain. Therefore, the impact of numerous air pollutants on the incidence of NAR in a Chinese pediatric population were investigated. Data on daily outpatient visits for NAR among children aged 0-18 years from 2015 to 2021 were obtained from Anhui Provincial Children's Hospital.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzed serum allergen-specific IgE (sIgE) in 3,822 patients with respiratory and skin diseases in Shanghai over one year to help understand and improve the diagnosis and treatment of allergies in the region.
  • - Results revealed that 88.4% of patients tested positive for at least one allergen, with 72.9% exhibiting multiple allergy sensitivities; the most common allergens included house dust mites, milk, fungi, and certain tropical mites.
  • - Statistical analysis indicated that certain allergens like cat dandruff were more prevalent in respiratory diseases, while food allergens like shrimp and crab showed lower positivity rates, providing insights into the allergen distribution for targeted prevention strategies.
