This paper provides guidance on how to properly analyse data generated from the Home Office fingermark grading scheme. The core of the issue is that it creates ordinal data and should therefore not be analysed using averages. To reduce confusion, it is recommended to label the different degrees of fingermark development as classes rather than numerical scores. Appropriate statistical tests are provided to properly analyse Home Office fingermark grading scheme data, however, not using statistical tests is perfectly acceptable so long as conclusions are worded appropriately and do not exaggerate the significance of the findings. Some guidance is provided on estimating sample size and optimal methods for presenting results.

"Shedder status" describes the inherent variation between individuals to leave touch DNA on a surface through direct contact. Depending on the amount and quality of DNA or cellular deposition, individuals are typically deemed high, intermediate, or low shedders. These nanoparticles were applied as latent fingerprint developers for marks on surfaces of diverse chemical composition, topography, optical characteristics, and spatially variant nature, typical of forensically challenging evidence. For quality assessment of the enhanced fingermarks, the developed images were analyzed holistically using the UK Home Office scale, forensic protocols and, in terms of their constituent features (minutiae), using forensic software.

The most important class of reagents for the enhancement of fingermarks on porous surfaces are those that react with the amino acid constituents of fingermarks. Ninhydrin, DFO (1,8-diazafluoren-9-one), and 1,2-indanedione are the three most common techniques widely known in forensic laboratories for the visualization of latent fingermarks on porous surfaces. In 2012 the Netherlands Forensic Institute replaced DFO by 1,2-indanedione-ZnCl after an internal validation, just like an increasing numbers of laboratories.
