The root of Lindera reflexa Hemsl. (LR) is a folk Chinses herbal medicine that has been used to treat gastritis and peptic ulcers. In this study, three new stilbenes (1-3) and two known flavonoids (4 and 5) were isolated from the antiulcer purified fractions of LR. The chemical structures of the isolated compounds were characterized comprehensively based on the basis of extensive spectroscopic data. Absolute configurations of compounds 1, 2, and 3 were determined by ECD calculations. The cytotoxic activities of compounds 1-5 were evaluated by MTT assay. Compound 4 showed the strongest inhibitory effect on the proliferation of tumor cells lines MGC803 and SMMC-7721, with IC values of 2.65 and 4.13 μM, respectively. The quantitative analysis of 12 compounds of the antiulcer purified fractions of LR were carried out by using the reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. Within the test range, all calibration curves showed good linearity (R > 0.9993). The LOD, LOQ, specificity, precision, and accuracy of the method were verified. Therefore, the present study may provide a valuable method for quality control the antiulcer purified fractions of LR.

Three-phase partitioning (TPP) is promising for isolating bioactive polysaccharides, but t-butanol's environmental impact limits its application. Deep eutectic solvents can serve as a green and recyclable alternative to t-butanol. This study introduces an ultrasonic-assisted DES three-phase partitioning (UA-TPP-DES) system to extract and purify American ginseng polysaccharides (AGPs).

Fresen, an African medicinal plant, is known for its analgesic, antiulcer, and antimicrobial properties, with its leaves, bark, and fruits deeply ingrained in indigenous healing practices. Two lectins, TerBLL (from leaves) and TerBSL (from seeds) of Fresen, were purified using salting-out and affinity chromatography on a fetuin-agarose column. The purified lectins were then assessed for protein yield, hemagglutination activity, and physicochemical properties.

Streptomyces isolate SOM013, a potential agent against microbial resistance and gastric ulcers.

Saudi Pharm J

June 2024

Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences, College of Applied Medical Sciences, Najran University, P.O. Box 1988, Najran, Saudi Arabia.

The menace of microbial resistance and re-emerging disease is still a problem for healthcare givers globally, and the need for newer sources of potent antibiotics has become paramount. This study investigated the antimicrobial and antiulcer activities of Streptomyces isolate SOM013. Streptomyces isolates were cultivated and purified following standard microbiological protocols.

Prebiotic-mediated gastroprotective potentials of three bacterial levans through NF-κB-modulation and upregulation of systemic IL-17A.

Int J Biol Macromol

October 2023

Chemistry of Natural and Microbial Products Department, Pharmaceutical Industries and Drug Research Institute, National Research Centre, Dokki 12622, Cairo, Egypt.

This study aimed to investigate whether the gastroprotective effects of three types of bacterial levans are correlated with their prebiotic-associated anti-inflammatory/antioxidant potentials. Three levans designated as LevAE, LevP, and LevZ were prepared from bacterial honey isolates; purified, and characterized using TLC, NMR, and FTIR. The anti-inflammatory properties of levan preparations were assessed in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.

Protein Pept Lett

November 2022

Biotechnology Department, Africa City of Technology, Khartoum, Sudan.

Background: Lectins are proteins with therapeutic and diagnostic potential that can be applied in battling various ailments.

Aim And Objective: This study was designed to purify and characterize the hemagglutinating activity derived from the leaves of Calotropis procera and its possible role in protecting the stomach against ethanol-induced lesions.

Methods: The Calotropis procera leaf lectin (ProLec), was isolated by homogenization of the defatted leaf powder in Phosphate-Buffered Saline (PBS) and purified by affinity chromatography on Sephadex G-100.
