This study analyzed the performance evaluation of alkali-activated composites (AAC) with an alkali-sulfate activator and determined the expected effects of applying AACs to actual sites. Results revealed that when the binder weight was increased by 100 kg/m at 7 days of age, the homogel strength of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and AAC increased by 0.9 and 5.0 MPa, respectively. According to the analysis of the matrix microstructures at 7 days of age, calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H, CaSiO·HO) and ettringite (CaAl(SO)(OH)·26HO) were formed in AAC, which are similar hydration products as found in OPC. Furthermore, the acid resistance analysis showed that the mass change of AAC in HCl and HSO solutions ranged from 36.1% to 88.0%, lower than that of OPC, indicating AAC's superior acid resistance. Moreover, the OPC and AAC binder weight ranges satisfying the target geltime (20-50 s) were estimated as 180.1-471.1 kg/m and 261.2-469.9 kg/m, respectively, and the global warming potential (GWP) according to binder weight range was 102.3-257.3 kg CO eq/m and 72.9-126.0 kg CO eq/m. Therefore, by applying AAC to actual sites, GWP is expected to be 29.5 (28.8%)-131.3 (51.0%) kg CO eq/m less than that of OPC.

Interleukin-11 (IL-11), a member of the IL-6 cytokine family, has potential pro-inflammatory and pro-fibrotic roles in pulmonary, hepatic, cardiovascular, renal and intestinal disease pathogenesis, including oncogenesis. The potential for therapeutic intervention in these disease spaces has therefore made the IL-11 signaling axis an attractive target in drug discovery, and antibody inhibitors of IL-11 signaling are currently under evaluation in Phase I/II clinical trials. While lower molecular weight small molecule and peptide inhibitors may offer the potential for improved tissue penetration, developability and manufacturing cost compared with a protein therapeutic, reports of such chemical matter in the literature are limited.

Utilization of loose waste biomass such as charcoal dust remains popular in low-to mid-income countries due to increased energy demands, poverty and heighten efforts to mitigate climate change. This study sought to investigate the effects of starch, paper and algae binders on the physical, mechanical and combustion characteristics and emission levels of manually-made acacia charcoal dust briquettes. Acacia charcoal dust is collected and mixed with different binders at binder proportions of 10 %, 15 %, 20 %, 25 % and 30 % of the total weight for individual samples.

Enteric-coated microcapsules can protect roxithromycin (ROX) from acid hydrolysis enhancing efficacy, solubility, and dissolution rate, representing a promising oral formulation for children and patients with swallowing difficulties. ROX-layered core particles were obtained with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) K30 as the binder and Eudragit L30 D-55 as the coating material using the Wurster process in a fluidized bed processor. The enteric-coated microcapsules were characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and polarized optical microscopy.

An approach to detecting discontinuities in carbon fiber-reinforced polymers, caused by impact loading followed by compression testing, was developed. An X-ray sensor-based installation was used, while some algorithms were developed to improve the quality of the obtained low-contrast radiographic images with negligible signal-to-noise ratios. For epoxy/AF (#1) composite subjected to a "high-velocity" steel-ball impact with subsequent compression loading, it was not possible to detect discontinuities since the orientation of the extended zone of interlayer delamination was perpendicular to the irradiation axis.
