Both nanoscience and nanotechnology have undoubtedly contributed significantly to the development of thermite-based nanoenergetic materials (NEMs) with tunable and tailorable combustion performance and their subsequent integration into devices. Specifically, this review article reflects the immense paybacks in designing and fabricating ordered/disordered assembly of energetic materials over multiple length scales (from nano- to milli-scales) in terms of realization of desired reaction rates and sensitivity. Besides presenting a critical review of present advancements made in the synthesis of NEMs, this article touches upon aspects related to various applications concomitantly.

Oxidized carbon nanotubes obtained by catalytic chemical vapor deposition were filled with an aqueous solution of nano-energetic materials using a very simple impregnation method. The work compares different energetic materials but focuses especially on an inorganic compound belonging to the Werner complexes, [Co(NH)][NO]. Our results show a large increase in released energy upon heating, which we demonstrate to be related to the confinement of the nano-energetic material either directly by filling of the inner channel of carbon nanotubes or to insertion in the triangular channels between adjacent nanotubes when they form bundles.

Article Synopsis
  • A new method was created to produce a hybrid explosive-nanothermite energetic composite using a peptide and a technique inspired by mussel adhesion.
  • The process involves applying polydopamine (PDA) onto the explosive HMX, which retains its reactivity and allows for the attachment of aluminum and copper oxide nanoparticles through specific interactions.
  • The enhanced composite showed superior energy release characteristics, exhibiting a 41% reduction in activation energy compared to a traditional mixture of HMX, aluminum, and copper oxide.

The application of nanoscale energetic materials (nEMs) composed of metal and oxidizer nanoparticles (NPs) in thermal engineering systems is limited by their relatively high sensitivity and complex three-dimensional (3D) formability. Polymers can be added to nEMs to lower the sensitivity and improve the formability of 3D structures. In this study, the effect of the addition of polyethylene oxide (PEO; polymer) on the combustion characteristics of aluminum (Al; fuel)/copper oxide (CuO; oxidizer)-based nEMs is investigated.

Aluminum iodate hexahydrate ([Al(HO)](IO)(HIO); AIH) represents a novel, oxidizing material for energetic applications. Recently, AIH was synthesized to replace the aluminum oxide passivation layer of aluminum nanoenergetic materials (ALNEM). The design of reactive coatings for ALNEM-doped hydrocarbon fuels in propulsion systems requires fundamental insights of the elementary steps of the decomposition of AIH.
