Zinc is an essential trace metal and its concentration above 4ppm reduces the aesthetic value of water. This study explores the possibility of using functionalized nanohybrids as Zn(II) ion scavengers from aqueous solution. Functionalized nanohybrids were synthesized by the attachment of thiosemicarbazide to silica. The material was characterized by TGA, SEM, FTIR, EDX, and BET analysis, which revealed ligand bonding to silica. The functionalized silica was employed as Zn(II) ion extractant in batch experiments and removed about 94.5% of the Zn(II) ions at pH 7, near zero point charge (6.5) in 30 min. Kinetics investigations revealed that zinc adsorption follows an intra particle diffusion mechanism and first-order kinetics (K = 0.1020 min). The data were fitted to Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich, and Langmuir models and useful ion exchange parameters were determined. The impact of co-existing ions on Zn(II) ion sequestration was also studied and it was found that the adsorbent can be used for selective removal of zinc with various ions in the matrix. Quantum mechanical investigations revealed that the Zn(II) ion adsorption on ZnBS1 is more favorable, having higher binding energy (BE) (-178.1 kcal/mol) and ∆ (-169.8), and making tridentate complex with the N and S sites of the chelating ligand. The negative ∆G and BE values suggest highly spontaneous Zn(II) adsorption on the modified silica even at low temperatures.

Nowadays, benzimidazole and its derivatives are widely assembled into multifunctional materials with various properties such as mechanochromism, photochromism, thermochromism and electrochromism. Herein, two novel zinc(II) coordination compounds, [Zn(L)Br]·2HO (1) and [Zn(L)Cl]·2HO (2) (L = tetra(1-benzo[]imidazol-2-yl)ethene), have been constructed one-pot facile synthesis from bis(1-benzo[]imidazol-2-yl)methane (L) and zinc(II) salts. The ligand L with a CC double bond was formed by C-C coupling of two sp-C atoms of L in solvothermal synthesis, which provides a new strategy to generate the conjugation system conveniently.

Energy crisis and environmental pollution are two central themes of contemporary research towards achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs). Material chemistry is the chief discipline that can resolve glitches in these areas through the appropriate design of chemical compounds with multifunctional properties. In this regard, two stable coordination polymers (CPs) were synthesised in this work using Zn(II) (3d) and Cd(II) (d) metal nodes with 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate () as the bridging ligand and monodentate pyridyl-N coordinated 9-fluoren-2-yl-pyridin-4-ylmethylene-amine (flpy) as the fluorogenic partner.

Three fluorescent Zn coordaintion polymers (CPs) have been synthesized from the reactions of Zn(NO) ⋅ 6HO, benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid (1,4-Hbdc), and angular carbazole-derived bispyridyl ligands (Cz-3,6-bpy or Cz-Pr-3,6-bpy). CPs 1-3 all adopt similar two-dimensional (2D) ring-and-rod layer structures, described as topologically 4-connected 2 ⋅ 6 nets where the Zn(II) centers act as 4-connected nodes. CPs 1 and 2 are a pair of solvent-mediated supramolecular isomers where the former shows a two-fold interlocked 2D →2D polyrotaxane-like entangled net and the latter reveals a four-fold interpenetrated 2D →3D polyrotaxane entanglement.

A magnetic chitosan-based ion-imprinted polymer (IIP) with high adsorption capacity, excellent selectivity for Ga(III), easy magnetic separation, and remarkable reusability was synthesized via a simple crosslinking polymerization. The IIP exhibited a Ga(III) adsorption capacity of 434.00 mg/g at pH 4, demonstrating high efficiency for Ga(III) removal from aqueous solutions.

Although significant progress has been made in the effective measurement of Zn(II), Аlizarin red S (ARS) was immobilized on polyethylene polyamine-modified polyacrylonitrile (PPF-1) via a new matrix. This approach allows the detection of low levels of Zn(II) ions in various water samples via preconcentrated atomic absorption spectrometry. The use of PPF-1 in a polymer matrix for zinc preconcentration presents several advantages over traditional sorbtion-spectroscopic methods, including reduced cost, high zinc recovery, increased sensitivity, and selectivity.
