The detection of emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment, such as ibuprofen and caffeine, was studied by means of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) using Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized with β-cyclodextrin (βCD) as a reducing agent. The effect on the SERS signal of different molar ratios of Ag/βCD in the synthesis route and the aging process of AgNPs were investigated by using trans-cinnamic as a test molecule. The SERS effectiveness of these β-cyclodextrin colloids (Ag@βCD) was also checked and compared with that of other silver sols usually employed in SERS synthesized by using other reducing agents such as citrate, borohydride and hydroxylamine. All the synthesized SERS substrates were characterized by different techniques. The experimental results indicate that Ag@βCD with the more diluted Ag/βCD molar ratio showed the best SERS signal, enabling detection at trace concentrations of 0.5 µM in the case of trans-cinnamic acid. The Ag@βCD sols also showed the best sensitivity for detecting ibuprofen and caffeine, reaching the lowest limit of detection (0.1 mM). The proposed synthetic route for Ag@βCD sols provides an improved SERS substrate for detecting organic pollutants with better performance than other standard silver sols.

Herein, we propose magnetic nanocomposites as a powerful new catalyst for organic pollutant reduction. Polypyrrole (PPy) was synthesized in situ within the semi-interpenetrating alginate (Alg)/gelatin (Ge) network in presence of α-FeO as encapsulating matrix and inorganic filler, respectively. The polymeric matrix can act as bifunctional agent such as a binder and stabilizer to improve nanocatalyst stability while preserving their catalytic/magnetic performances.

In this work, the structure of silica thin films synthesized with three different SiO precursors and obtained by the sol-gel method and dip coating technique was studied. Additionally, the influence of Ag addition on the obtained silica sols and then gel structure was investigated. Silica coatings show antireflective properties and high thermal resistance, as well as hydrophobic or hydrophilic properties.

Detergents and disinfectants for dairy industry must meet a variety of characteristics, including low toxicity, high antibacterial activity, and excellent rinsing of pollutants from working surfaces. This work presents an innovative detergent-disinfectant agent based on whey mineralizate and silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), which allows reducing production costs and ensuring high cleanliness of treated surfaces compared to analogues. For this purpose, a method for obtaining sols of Ag NPs stabilized with didecyldimethylammonium bromide (Ag NPs-DDAB) was developed and optimized using neural network algorithms.

Herein, bionanocomposite beads based on Carboxymethyl cellulose/Dextrant sulfate (CMC/DS) embedding silver nanoparticle-functionalized zeolite (AgZ) were developed and proposed as catalysts for catalytic hydrogenation of Direct Red 16 (DR16) azo dye under different experimental parameters. The obtained results showed that AgZ incorporation into the polymer matrix produced highly porous structures with improved thermal stability. For antibacterial application, it was shown that the engineered bionanocomposites were effective against all tested bacteria.

Knowledge regarding the denaturation process and control methods for depolymerized sol-state myofibrillar proteins (MPs) during freezing remains scant. This study investigated the effects of protein cross-linking treatment before freezing on physicochemical and subsequent gelation properties of MPs sol subjected to freeze-thaw (F-T) cycles. Results indicated that after five F-T cycles, cross-linked MPs sols showed increased high molecular weight polymers and bound water (T and T) mobility, suggesting enhanced protein-protein interactions at the expense of protein-water interactions.
