Background: Although previous studies have shown that short-term exposure to mercury is associated with obesity, it should be noted that mercury is not easily released and that it constantly accumulates in the body. However, few studies have explored the association between chronic mercury exposure and obesity. This study aimed to examine the association between chronic mercury exposure and obesity in Korean adults.
Methods: The study used baseline data from the Trace Element Study of Korean Adults in Yeungnam area. A total of 495 participants aged 40-69 years who provided the required information (demographic, diet, lifestyle, toenail mercury levels, and health examination results) were included. Toenail mercury levels were measured using neutron-activation analysis. Body mass index and waist circumference were obtained from medical examination. Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression and restricted cubic spline regression were used in the analysis.
Results: In the fully adjusted logistic regression models, participants with the highest toenail mercury levels had a higher prevalence of obesity (odds ratio [OR]: 3.26, 95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.79-5.93) and abdominal obesity (OR: 2.30, 95 % CI: 1.15-4.59). In the cubic spline regression model, linear relationships were confirmed between increased toenail mercury levels and higher prevalence of obesity and abdominal obesity (all p > 0.05 for nonlinearity).
Conclusions: In summary, chronic mercury exposure was associated with higher prevalence of obesity and abdominal obesity in Korean adults. Therefore, the development of public health interventions against environmental exposure of foods is required to manage and prevent obesity.

Background: Mechanistic studies of the effects of environmental risk factors have been exploring the potential role of microRNA(miRNAs) as a possible pathway to clinical disease. In this study we examine whether levels of toenail metals are associated with changes in extracellular miRNA(ex-miRNA) expression.
Methods: We used data derived from the Normative Aging Study from 1996 to 2014 to conduct our analyses.

Telomere length is associated with chronic diseases and, in younger populations, may represent a biomarker of disease susceptibility. As growing evidence suggests that environmental factors, including metals, may impact telomere length. We investigated the association between 17 metals measured in toenail samples and leukocyte relative telomere length (RTL), among 472 5- to 7-year-old children enrolled in the Bangladesh Environmental Research in Children's Health (BiRCH) cohortIn single-exposure linear regression models, a doubling of arsenic (As) and mercury (Hg) (μg/g) were associated with a -0.

Current trends are promoting youth, beauty, health, and fitness. Individuals often seek out remedies, such as medicines or dietary supplements (DS), to achieve these goals. However, highly processed foods, chronic stress, and environmental pollution contribute to the development of civilization diseases.

Fish consumption is one of the main sources of mercury (Hg) exposure, but few studies have examined Hg exposure from fish consumption among children. This study aimed to assess the frequency of fish intake and associations with Hg and other element concentrations among 700 three-year-old children from the New Hampshire Birth Cohort Study. Usual fish intake was derived from a validated food frequency questionnaire (Block Questionnaire for ages 2-7) and toenail element concentrations were determined using ICP-MS.

Macrochelys temminckii (alligator snapping turtle) is an aquatic turtle endemic to the southeastern United States that was proposed for listing under the Endangered Species Act in 2021. In the present study we analyzed total mercury (THg) concentrations in skeletal muscle, tail clips, and nail tissue of 93 M. temminckii sampled from 14 waterbodies in eastern Texas (USA).
