Specialized plant-insect interactions are a defining feature of life on earth, yet we are only beginning to understand the factors that set limits on host ranges in herbivorous insects. To better understand the recent adoption of alfalfa as a host plant by the Melissa blue butterfly, we quantified arthropod assemblages and plant metabolites across a wide geographic region while controlling for climate and dispersal inferred from population genomic variation. The presence of the butterfly is successfully predicted by direct and indirect effects of plant traits and interactions with other species. Results are consistent with the predictions of a theoretical model of parasite host range in which specialization is an epiphenomenon of the many barriers to be overcome rather than a consequence of trade-offs in developmental physiology.

Background: Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is the most common tick-borne viral infection in Eurasia. Outcomes range from asymptomatic infection to fatal encephalitis, with host genetics likely playing a role. BALB/c mice have intermediate susceptibility to TBE virus (TBEV) and STS mice are highly resistant, whereas the recombinant congenic strain CcS-11, which carries 12.

Background: Polyclonal autologous T cells that are epigenetically reprogrammed through mTOR inhibition and IFN-α polarization (RAPA-201) represent a novel approach to the adoptive T cell therapy of cancer. Ex vivo inhibition of mTOR results causes a shift towards T central memory (T) whereas ex vivo IFN-α promotes type I cytokines, with each of these functions known to enhance the adoptive T cell therapy of cancer. Rapamycin-resistant T cells polarized for a type II cytokine phenotype were previously evaluated in the allogeneic transplantation context.

Partner fidelity, not geography, drives co-diversification of gut microbiota with hominids.

Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ 08544, USA.

Bacterial strains that inhabit the gastrointestinal tracts of hominids have diversified in parallel (co-diversified) with their host species. The extent to which co-diversification has been mediated by partner fidelity between strains and hosts or by geographical distance between hosts is not clear due to a lack of strain-level data from clades of hosts with unconfounded phylogenetic relationships and geographical distributions. Here, I tested these competing hypotheses through meta-analyses of 7121 gut bacterial genomes assembled from wild-living ape species and subspecies sampled throughout their ranges in equatorial Africa.

Optimized Cerium vanadate catalytic host with simple heterostructure engineering achieving regulated polysulfide deposition for high-performance Lithium-Sulfur batteries under harsh conditions.

J Colloid Interface Sci

Meliorating the behavior deposition of lithium polysulfides (LiPS) is crucial for enhancing the electrochemical performance of sulfur cathodes, which could be implemented by the precise modulation on the catalytic host. Herein, heterostructure engineering is employed to tune up the catalytic capability of CeVO, by introducing CeO through a simple adjustment in the addition sequence of reactants. The formed CeVO/CeO heterostructure has been demonstrated to exhibit appropriate interaction strength with LiPS for accelerating the catalytic conversion process, as well as an engineered surface for inducing three dimensional (3D) LiS deposition, thereby endowing the corresponding sulfur cathodes with excellent electrochemical performance under harsh conditions.
