Biohazard performance of Sr radionuclide can be significantly magnified by its release from the contaminated sedimentation. In this study, hydroxyapatite nanoparticle-functionalized activated carbon electrode (AC-HAP) was synthesized and stacked to the cathode compartment of the electrokinetic (EK) system to develop a unipolar three-dimensional (3D) electrochemical process for Sr removal from spiked soils. Sr adsorption by AC-HAP can be fitted by the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models and the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin isotherm models. The largest monolayer adsorption capacity of AC-HAP of 69.49 mg g was evaluated in the pH range of 10-12 and at 40 °C. 3D EK further intensified the adsorption process of AC-HAP and the corresponding Sr removal from aqueous environments. Voltage gradients and proposing time had a significant effect on the migration and transmission of Sr in the electrolyzer. The influence of competitive ions on Sr removal in the stock solutions followed Al < Mg < K < Na < Ca while followed Al < Na < K < Mg < Ca in 3D EK. The first three cycles for AC-HAP had taken roughly 50% of the reusability percentage. Sr removal from spiked samples in 3D EK was achieved by acid dissolution, electromigration, and selective uptake on particle electrode.

Modeling suction of unsaturated granular soil treated with biochar in plant microbial fuel cell bioelectricity system.

Sci Rep

Departamento de Ciencias de la Construcción, Facultad de Ciencias de la Construcción Ordenamiento Territorial, Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana, Santiago, Chile.

There is an initiative driven by the carbon-neutrality nature of biochar in recent times, where various countries across Europe and North America have introduced perks to encourage the production of biochar for construction purposes. This objective aligns with the zero greenhouse emission targets set by COP27 for 2050. This research work seeks to assess the effectiveness of biochar in soils with varying grain size distributions in enhancing the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC).

Department of Nephrology, Second Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha 410011.

Objectives: IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is the most common primary glomerular disease in China, but its pathogenesis remains unclear. This study aims to explore the regulatory role of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway in autophagy and mesangial proliferation during renal injury in IgA.

Methods: The activity of mTOR and autophagy was evaluated in kidney samples from IgAN patients and in an IgAN mouse model induced by oral bovine serum albumin and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) injection.

The mitochondriotropic antioxidants AntiOxBEN and AntiOxCIN are structurally-similar but differentially alter energy homeostasis in human skin fibroblasts.

Mitochondrial dysfunction and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation play an import role in different human pathologies. In this context, mitochondrial targeting of potentially protective antioxidants by their coupling to the lipophilic triphenylphosphonium cation (TPP) is widely applied. Employing a six‑carbon (C) linker, we recently demonstrated that mitochondria-targeted phenolic antioxidants derived from gallic acid (AntiOxBEN) and caffeic acid (AntiOxCIN) counterbalance oxidative stress in primary human skin fibroblasts by activating ROS-protective mechanisms.

The complex sorption mechanisms of carbon adsorbents for the diverse group of persistent, mobile, and potentially toxic contaminants (PMs or PMTs) present significant challenges in understanding and predicting adsorption behavior. While the development of quantitative predictive tools for adsorbent design often relies on extensive training data, there is a notable lack of experimental sorption data for PMs accompanied by detailed sorbent characterization. Rather than focusing on predictive tool development, this study aims to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of sorption by applying data analysis methods to a high-quality dataset.
