Neurodegenerative diseases are significant health concerns that have a profound impact on the quality and duration of life for millions of individuals. These diseases are characterized by pathological changes in various brain regions, specific genetic mutations associated with the disease, deposits of abnormal proteins, and the degeneration of neurological cells. As neurodegenerative disorders vary in their epidemiological characteristics and vulnerability of neurons, treatment of these diseases is usually aimed at slowing disease progression.

Around one-quarter of all patients undergoing cardiac procedures, particularly those on cardiopulmonary bypass, develop cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury (CSA-AKI). This complication increases the risk of several serious morbidities and of mortality, representing a significant burden for both patients and the healthcare system. Patients with diminished kidney function before surgery, such as those with chronic kidney disease, are at heightened risk of developing CSA-AKI and have poorer outcomes than patients without preexisting kidney injury who develop CSA-AKI.

Preliminary Evidence for Perturbation-Based tACS-EEG Biomarkers of Gamma Activity in Alzheimer's Disease.

Int J Geriatr Psychiatry

January 2025

Precision Neuroscience & Neuromodulation Program, Gordon Center for Medical Imaging, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by impaired inhibitory circuitry and GABAergic dysfunction, which is associated with reduced fast brain oscillations in the gamma band (γ, 30-90 Hz) in several animal models. Investigating such activity in human patients could lead to the identification of novel biomarkers of diagnostic and prognostic value. The current study aimed to test a multimodal "Perturbation-based" transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation-Electroencephalography (tACS)-EEG protocol to detect how responses to tACS in AD patients correlate with patients' clinical phenotype.

Resinacein S ameliorates the obesity in mice via activating the brown adipose tissue.

Pak J Pharm Sci

January 2025

Department of Endocrinology, Gongli Hospital of Shanghai Pudong New Area, School of Gongli Hospital Medical Technology, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, Shanghai, China.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is an ideal target organ for obesity treatment. Resinacein S is extracted from Ganoderma lucidum and can elevate Uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) in cells, but its related effects at the animal level are not clear. The mice were fed with high-fat diet to construct obesity models and treated with Resinacein S.

Role of antioxidative stress activity of Fucoxanthin nanoparticle as hepatoprotective in diabetic rats.

Pak J Pharm Sci

January 2025

Department of Basic Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Airlangga, University, Surabaya, Indonesia.

This study attempts to prove that the antioxidant effect of fucoxanthin nanoparticles can prevent streptozotocin-induced rat liver damage. Fucoxanthin nanoparticles are synthesized using the high-energy ball milling method. Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) was then used to describe the sizes of the fucoxanthin nanoparticles.
