Epstein-Barr virus is an etiologic agent of several malignancies. In this study, we explored the association of Epstein-Barr virus-encoded RNA1 and Epstein-Barr virus latent membrane protein 1 co-expression with osteosarcoma. Epstein-Barr virus-encoded RNA1 expression in tumor cells was quantified using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and in situ hybridization and Epstein-Barr virus latent membrane protein 1 expression was measured using immunohistochemistry staining. There was a statistically significant association between Epstein-Barr virus latent membrane protein 1 and Epstein-Barr virus-encoded RNA1 co-expression and characteristics of osteosarcoma such as nodal stage (p < 0.04), metastasis (p < 0.04), Ki67 index (p < 0.03), and tumor stage (p < 0.05). Co-expression of Epstein-Barr virus-encoded RNA1 and Epstein-Barr virus latent membrane protein 1 in tumors correlated with advanced osteosarcoma and indicated the aggressiveness of bone sarcoma.

Despite decades of effort, deciphering miRNA targets remains challenging, leading to an incomplete miRNA interactome and partially elucidated miRNA functions. Here, we introduce microT-CNN, an avant-garde deep convolutional neural network model that moves the needle by integrating hundreds of tissue-matched (in-)direct experiments from 26 distinct cell types, corresponding to a unique training and evaluation set of >60 000 miRNA binding events and ~30 000 unique miRNA-gene target pairs.

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a malignant lymphoma with poor prognosis that occurs in immunocompromised and elderly patients. We describe the case of a 75-year-old woman with PBL as a methotrexate-associated lymphoproliferative disorder (MTX-LPD). This study aims to investigate the effect of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) reactivation or EBV reactivation with dexamethasone (DXM) in patients with adverse drug reactions (ADRs) through evaluating the levels of monocyte, macrophage M2/M1, and cytokines, and investigating whether expression of EBV receptor EphA2 could specifically influence EBV activation in ADRs. We performed a prospective longitudinal study to analyze the monocytes, macrophages, M2/M1 ratio, and cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-4, IL-13, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interferon (IFN)-γ, IFN-β, C-X-C motif chemokine ligand (CXCL)9, and CXCL10, in patients with maculopapular exanthema (MPE) and Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis (SJS/TEN), and control groups after disease onset. Skin biopsy samples from these patients were subjected to hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining to examine tissue architecture and inflammatory cell infiltration, as well as Epstein-Barr virus-encoded RNA (EBER) staining to detect the presence of EBV within the skin lesions.
