The work within identifies the volume of distribution (VD) of plutonium using data from studies in which rats were administered an intravenous bolus injection of 239Pu4+-citrate. The research investigated two separate datasets. Data published by Durbin and colleagues in "Plutonium Deposition Kinetics in Rats" and studies conducted by Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute (LRRI) were examined. The goal of this research was to identify a value of VD consistent with the known biological behavior of plutonium. The identified VD is necessary to develop a physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model. The creation of a PBPK model describing the behavior of plutonium in the body enables the comparison of transfer rates to validate the biokinetic models currently in use for internal dosimetry purposes. The VD of a substance describes the distribution between intracellular and extracellular fluid compartments, providing information such as cellular uptake and protein binding. The VD time profiles and values found using the Durbin data were consistent with known behavior of plutonium. The VD values found using data provided by LRRI were not consistent with known behavior of plutonium; however, the VD time profiles generated may still be of use for PBPK modeling.

Plutonium uranium reduction extraction (PUREX) is a liquid-liquid extraction process used to recover plutonium (Pu) and uranium (U) from irradiated uranium fuel for various nuclear-related applications. Despite extensive efforts, quantitative prediction of liquid-liquid extraction parameters, i.e.

Cryoconite is abundant in artificial radionuclides such as plutonium (Pu) and amounts of radioactive contaminants is stored in glaciers. Under global warming and glaciers rapid retreating, glaciers could be a second source for radioactive contaminants and the stored Pu isotopes could be released to the downstream areas through surface runoff. However, the knowledge and understanding on the migration behavior and cycling of Pu isotopes in the ice cap is quite limited.

The co-extraction of pertechnetate (TcO) along with the uranyl ion (UO) is a problematic issue that complicates the Plutonium Uranium Reduction EXtraction (PUREX) process for reprocessing spent nuclear fuel. Unfortunately, research on the interactions of TcO with UO is very scarce. This work quantitatively investigated the interactions of TcO and its analog ReO with UO in acetonitrile with 0.

Article Synopsis
  • The China Sea faces increased risk of contamination from human-made radionuclides, particularly plutonium (Pu) and neptunium (Np), making it essential to study their origins and movement for safety assessments.
  • This study uses cutting-edge SF-ICP-MS technology to measure Pu and Np levels in sediment cores from the northern Taiwan Strait and East China Sea, confirming their utility as tools for dating geological events.
  • Findings show global fallout and nearby nuclear tests as primary sources of these isotopes, with distinctive behaviors affecting their sediment distribution and environmental mobility, highlighting different preservation in sediments versus water.

Article Synopsis
  • * Results indicate no increase in plutonium levels in fish after major discharges from 2018-2020, but grayling had significantly higher Pu concentrations due to their diet of benthic invertebrates, while larger pike showed increasing Pu levels.
  • * High concentrations of radiocesium and potassium were found in pike, attributed to biomagnification, leading to potential ecological risk assessments and a foundation for future research on radionuclides in freshwater ecosystems.
