The Portuguese National Health Service (NHS) was established in 1979. Since its inception, the relationship of the NHS with private-for-profit and private-non-profit organisations has been controversially discussed between left and right-wing political parties, and this has also led also to academic debate. In 1990, a Health Basic Law was approved by right-wing parties, which allowed public-private partnerships (PPPs) in the health system and led to an increased role of the private sector in health care provision. During the 2015 general elections, the role of PPPs in the health system was an important topic of discussion, with all left-wing parties calling for an end of PPPs in the NHS. In 2019, after two years of intense political controversies, left-wing parties supporting the minority socialist government approved a new Health Basic Law. This paper analyses the process of policy formulation, tracing the process of adoption and the views of the main political parties involved. Although some parties wished to eliminate PPPs and to mandate that services in the NHS should be provided exclusively by public providers, this was not included in the final version of the law. Nevertheless, the new Health Basic Law re-enhances the central role of the NHS in the health system, clarifying that the private and non-profit sectors should only play a complementary role.

Histone demethylases in autophagy and inflammation.

Cell Commun Signal

Autophagy dysfunction is associated with changes in autophagy-related genes. Various factors are connected to autophagy, and the mechanism regulating autophagy is highly complicated. Epigenetic changes, such as aberrant expression of histone demethylase, are actively associated not only with oncogenesis but also with inflammatory responses.

Background: Insulin resistance proxy indicators are significantly associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes. However, the correlations between the estimated glucose disposal rate (eGDR) index and CVD and its subtypes have yet to be thoroughly researched.

Methods: 10,690 respondents with diabetes and prediabetes from the NHANES 1999-2016 were enrolled in the study.

A novel technique of cryodenervation for murine vagus nerve: implications for acute lung inflammation.

Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Shanghai East Hospital, School of Medicine, Tongji University, Shanghai, 200092, China.

Background: Neuroimmune interaction is an underestimated mechanism for lung diseases, and cryoablation is a competitive advantageous technique than other non-pharmacologic interventions for peripheral nerve innervating the lung. However, a lack of cryodenervation model in laboratory rodents leads to the obscure mechanisms for techniques used in clinic.

Method: Herein, we developed a novel practical method for mouse peripheral nerve cryoablation, named visualized and simple cryodenervation (VSCD).

Short-acting growth hormone supplementation for bone age and growth rate in children with idiopathic short stature: a meta-analysis.

BMC Pediatr

January 2025

Department of Child Health, West China Second University Hospital, Sichuan University, No.20, Section 3, Renmin South Road, Wuhou District, Chengdu City, 610041, Sichuan Province, China.

Objective: To explore the effect of short-acting growth hormone (GH) supplementation on bone age and growth rate of children with idiopathic short stature.

Methods: The authoritative databases such as PubMed, Medline, and Web of Science were extensively searched through the systematic and comprehensive literature retrieval strategy to compile the clinical research data on the treatment of idiopathic short stature with short-acting GH. The study will be strictly screened to ensure that all enrolled research subjects are patients with idiopathic short stature, and the intervention method is defined as short-acting GH replacement therapy, and a reasonable control group is set, such as placebo treatment, to ensure the scientificity and comparability of research results.

Nutritional epidemiology aims to link dietary exposures to chronic disease, but the instruments for evaluating dietary intake are inaccurate. One way to identify unreliable data and the sources of errors is to compare estimated intakes with the total energy expenditure (TEE). In this study, we used the International Atomic Energy Agency Doubly Labeled Water Database to derive a predictive equation for TEE using 6,497 measures of TEE in individuals aged 4 to 96 years.
