BACKGROUND Despite advances in diagnosis and treatment, epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) continues to be highly lethal. Undoubtedly, the introduction of poly(adenosine diphosphate-ribose) polymerase inhibitors such as olaparib will alter this clinical picture. Phase III studies have already documented clinically relevant outcomes, particularly among patients with BRCA mutations and homologous recombination deficiency. CASE REPORT Here we present a case report that documents the evolution of refractory multidrug-resistant, BRCA1-mutated EOC in a patient who had advanced clinical deterioration, carcinomatosis, and central nervous system (CNS) involvement that responded favorably to olaparib, resulting in a tripling of her progression-free survival. CONCLUSIONS Olaparib proved to be a safe and effective option for the treatment of a patient with multidrug-resistant, BRCA1-mutated EOC with CNS metastases. This suggests that early initiation of the drug in similar cases can be very useful.

Background: Aortic dissection occurs rarely during pregnancy but carries a significantly high vital risk for both the mother and the fetus. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical for a successful outcome.

Case Presentation: A 32-year-old pregnant woman at 31 weeks of gestation began experiencing shortness of breath, chest pain, and palpitations, which were attributed to an anxiety disorder she had been previously diagnosed with.

A case series on the basic concept and design of removable partial dentures: support and bracing considerations.

BMC Oral Health

January 2025

Department of Removable Prosthodontics, School of Dentistry, Aichi Gakuin University, 2-11 Suemori- dori, Chikusa-ku, Nagoya, Aichi, 464-8651, Japan.

Background: When designing removable partial dentures, maximizing the effectiveness of support and bracing is necessary to minimize denture movement. Therefore, it is essential to emphasize the importance of providing patients with appropriate, safe, and secure removable partial dentures and have clinicians rerecognize the concept and importance of support and bracing. This study aimed to present extension-base removable partial dentures through six specific clinical case series and describe the effect of support and bracing action on denture design, which is essential for denture movement minimization.

Ectopic thyroid tissue in the airway: a case report.

BMC Pulm Med

January 2025

Department of Respiratory Medicine, The Second Hospital of Jilin University, No. 4026 Yatai street, Changchun, 130041, Jilin, China.

Background: Ectopic thyroid tissue (ETT) is a rare congenital anomaly caused by the abnormal embryonic migration of thyroid tissue, leading to its presence outside its usual pretracheal location. This condition can lead to diagnostic challenges, especially when located within the airway, as it mimics other respiratory disorders such as asthma.

Case Presentation: We report the case of a 69-year-old man with endotracheal ETT presenting with severe dyspnea, and the lesion was initially suspected to be malignant.

Background: Oliguric acute kidney injury (AKI) is one of the critical conditions which needs emergent treatment due to the lack of the capacity of excreting toxins and fluids, and plasma membrane bleb formation is considered as one of the characteristic morphologic alterations in ischemic AKI in both animal models and human. We present here an autopsy case with clear electron microscopy images capturing a definitive instance of blebbing in ischemic AKI.

Case Presentation: A 66-year-old man was admitted for oliguric AKI with nephrotic syndrome (NS).
