Purpose: Infection, which is one of the possible complications of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs), makes the treatment of ulcers challenging because of its negative impact on healing processes and the high prevalence of multiresistant germs. This study is aimed at verifying the effect of a surgical CO laser (which reduces the bacterial load and allows a more accurate debridement), as compared with the traditional lancets, on the healing rate of DFU.

Methods: The present case-control retrospective analysis was performed on patients with chronic (>6 months) DFU with Texas grade >1, treated with 80 W surgical CO laser (DEKA SmartXide2 C80, El.En. Group) and compared with a matched sample of patients with similar characteristics, who were treated with a traditional surgical approach. The debridement was performed trying to achieve the complete removal of nonviable tissues. The principal endpoint was the proportion of patients healed at 6 months. All analyses were carried out with SPSS 25.0. The study protocol was approved by the local ethical committee.

Results: This study included 118 patients (59 cases and 59 controls). At 6 months, the proportion of healing patients was 35% and 18% in cases and controls, respectively ( = .034). The corresponding figure at 1 year was 62% and 38% ( = .009), whereas no difference was observed at 1, 2, and 3 months. No serious adverse event was observed.

Conclusions: In this article, we show for the first time that CO laser treatment, in comparison with traditional surgical approaches, can be associated with an increased healing rate in patients with DFU.

Background: Candida albicans is the primary cause of vulvovaginal candidiasis, a worldwide health concern for women. The use of supplemental methods, such as antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) and probiotics, was promoted by the ineffectiveness of the existing antifungal drugs.

Methods: This study examines the combined effects of probiotics (Bacillus and Enterococcus isolated from the fermented pickles) and PDT (using red laser (655 nm, 18 J/cm) as a light source and methylene blue dye (30 mg/mL) as a photosensitizer) on the in vitro virulence activity of C.

Background: Acne is an inflammatory skin disease afflicting the majority of the world's population at some point in their lifetime, and is seen to be chronic in about 50% of cases. Acne leads to significant social withdrawal, depression, and disfiguring scars in many cases. Available treatments are characterized by high rates of relapse, dangerous side effects, and social stigma, which often leads to poor patient compliance and treatment failure.

Fugitive or diffuse methane emissions constitute an important source of damage to the environment, much greater even than CO2 both over a time span of 20 years and over a longer time span of 100. It is therefore of preeminent importance to undertake all the efforts necessary to implement new tools, protocols, and methods that contribute to the identification and measurement of these emissions to implement site-specific actions of mitigation, repair, and conscious management of the emitting plants. Among the remote sensing and leak detection technologies currently used, the tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) method plays a relevant role.

Healthy brain aging involves changes in both brain structure and function, including alterations in cellular composition and microstructure across brain regions. Unlike diffusion-weighted MRI (dMRI), diffusion-weighted MR spectroscopy (dMRS) can assess cell-type specific microstructural changes, providing indirect information on both cell composition and microstructure through the quantification and interpretation of metabolites' diffusion properties. This work investigates age-related changes in the higher-order diffusion properties of total N-Acetyl-aspartate (neuronal biomarker), total choline (glial biomarker), and total creatine (both neuronal and glial biomarker) beyond the classical apparent diffusion coefficient in cerebral and cerebellar gray matter of healthy human brain.
