A compound-specific chlorine/bromine isotope analysis (Cl-/Br-CSIA) method was developed using gas chromatography-quadrupole mass spectrometry for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), which are toxic to human health and are frequently detected in various abiotic and biotic media. For PCB congeners, the molecular ion method for a concentration of 0.5-10.0 ppm, a dwell time of 20-100 ms, a relative EM voltage of 200 V, an electric current of 34 μA, and an ionization energy of 70 eV was determined as the most suitable scheme, which obtained standard deviations (SDs) of chlorine isotope ratios ranging from 0.00008 to 0.00068. As for the PBDE congeners, the lowest SDs, ranging from 0.00050 to 0.00172, were determined using the top four ion method with a concentration of 5-10 ppm and a dwell time of 20-50 ms. Both the chlorine and bromine isotope ratios showed strong concentration dependencies. Therefore, external standardization or detecting chlorine and bromine isotope ratios at a uniform concentration level is necessary to eliminate the concentration effect. In addition, C-correction is critical to remove interference from carbon isotopes. This newly developed Cl-/Br-CSIA method successfully determined the chlorine/bromine isotope ratios of PCBs/PBDEs in technical mixtures and traced the chlorine/bromine isotope ratio variations of PCBs/PBDEs in photodegradation experiments, thereby suggesting that it is a promising tool for assessing the sources and transformation processes of PCBs and PDBEs in the environment.

Single particle - inductively coupled plasma - mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS) is a powerful technique for characterization of the elemental and isotopic composition of individual particles. In this work, the capabilities of the newest generation of MC-ICP-MS with acquisition rates down to 50 ms were evaluated for single particle analysis, with a focus on isotopic precision achievable on a single-particle level. Nd (NdVO) nanoparticles (∼120 nm in diameter) were used as case study and were first characterized in terms of mass (respective size) and particle number concentration by SP-ICP-TOF-MS and then by SP-MC-ICP-MS for isotopic precision.

Importance: Understanding environmental risk factors for gestational diabetes (GD) is crucial for developing preventive strategies and improving pregnancy outcomes.
Objective: To examine the association of county-level radon exposure with GD risk in pregnant individuals.
Design, Setting, And Participants: This multicenter, population-based cohort study used data from the Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study: Monitoring Mothers-to-Be (nuMoM2b) cohort, which recruited nulliparous pregnant participants from 8 US clinical centers between October 2010 and September 2013.

U and U are proven to be useful tracers to investigate upper-ocean hydrodynamics due to their source-specific isotopic ratios and conservative behaviors in the open ocean. However, their application in the Pacific Ocean has been limited by scarce observations and unclear source-term information. Here, we present our observations of U and U in the western North Pacific Subtropical Gyre (NPStG), showing the presence of a source of anthropogenic U featured by a low U/U ratio (∼1 × 10), which is an order of magnitude lower than the global fallout signature (∼2 × 10).

Phytotoxic air pollutants such as atmospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO) are among the major stresses affecting tree photosynthesis in urban areas. We clarified the relationship between NO concentrations and photosynthetic function for three major urban trees, Prunus × yedoensis, Rhododendron pulchrum, and Ginkgo biloba, planted in Kyoto and surrounding cities, combining our published data and new data collected from 2020 to 2023. High NO increased long-term water use efficiency for all species.

Radiation risk through seafood consumption is a big public concern under the discharge of nuclear contaminated water. Plutonium is an important radionuclide in view of radiation risk due to its high radiological and chemical toxicity, as well as consistent presence in the environment. The distribution and level of plutonium isotopes (Pu, Pu) in marine biota collected along the coast of China in 2022-2023 were investigated.
