Outside Asia, Seoul virus (SEOV) is an underestimated pathogen. In Germany, autochthonous SEOV-associated hantavirus disease has not been unequivocally diagnosed. We found clinical and molecular evidence for SEOV infection in a young woman; her pet rat was the source of infection.

Salvage pathway of vitamin B absorption in chickens with mutant tumor virus a receptor.

Poult Sci

December 2024

Department of Agricultural Biotechnology and Research Institute of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Seoul National University, Seoul, Republic of Korea; Department of International Agricultural Technology & Institute of Green Bioscience and Technology, Seoul National University, Pyeongchang, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

The tumor virus A receptor (TVA), a member of the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) family, serves as an entry receptor for Avian Leukosis Virus (ALV) subgroups A and K, as well as a receptor for vitamin B bound to transcobalamin. Naturally occurring genetic variants in the TVA gene determine susceptibility or resistance to ALV-A and -K, but the effects of these mutated TVA on vitamin B uptake have not been investigated systemically. We found four TVA variants comprising the wild type (TVA), a single nucleotide polymorphism variant (TVA), and two partial deletions in the splicing branch point region (TVA).

Multiple sphingolipid-metabolizing enzymes modulate influenza virus replication.

Virology

Departments of Surgery & Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, University of Missouri, Columbia, MO, 65212, USA. Electronic address:

The sphingolipid network is sustained principally by the balance of bioactive sphingolipid molecules and their regulation by sphingolipid-metabolizing enzymes. The components in the lipid system display key functions in numerous cellular and disease conditions including virus infections. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a fruitful effort to use an inhibitor that blocks the activity of sphingosine kinase (SphK) 2 to cure the devastating disease.

Background: Although recommended isolation periods for Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have been shortened as the pandemic has subsided, prolonged Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) shedding remains common in immunocompromised patients. This study estimated the probability of viral clearance in these patients based on elapsed days and specific risk factors.

Methods: We prospectively enrolled immunocompromised patients with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis from January 2022 to May 2023 during the Omicron variant era.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV) is a tick-borne virus with a human mortality rate of up to 30%, posing a significant threat to public health. However, the lack of suitable research models has impeded the development of effective human vaccines. In this study, we engineered transgenic mice (3xTg) using a novel construct that simultaneously expresses three C-type Lectin receptors, identified as critical SFTSV entry receptors.

Background/aims: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) exhibits significant sex disparities in incidence, yet its molecular mechanisms remain unclear. We explored the role of telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) genetic alterations and hepatitis B virus (HBV) integration, both known major contributors to HCC, in sex-specific risk for HBV-related HCC.

Methods: We examined 310 HBV-related HCC tissues to investigate sex-specific TERT promoter (TERT-pro) mutations and HBV integration profiles, stratified by sex and age, and validated with single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data.
