Article Synopsis
  • Bronchiolitis is a major reason infants are hospitalized in their first year and is more common in babies born to mothers with asthma.
  • The study analyzed cord blood granulocytes (eosinophils and neutrophils) from 89 infants, examining their relationship to bronchiolitis hospitalization over the first year.

Six decades ago, Friedenstein and coworkers published a series of seminal papers identifying a cell population in bone marrow with osteogenic potential, now referred to as mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). This work was also instrumental in establishing the identity of hematopoietic stem cell and the identification of skeletal stem/progenitor cell (SSPC) populations in various skeletal compartments. In recognition of the centenary year of Friedenstein's birth, I review key aspects of his work and discuss the evolving concept of the MSC and its various euphemisms indorsed by changing paradigms in the field.

Many important contributions have enriched our knowledge of Basaglia's work in recent months. He was a modern practical intellectual, in the Gramscian sense, where the authentic intellectual moves from the real needs of the masses and seeks their solution from the given historical situation, recomposing it in the more general course of the world.

The psychiatric reform act passed in Italy in 1978 - which was born in the wake of Franco Basaglia's work - had among its main aims the restoration of dignity and rights to people suffering from mental disorders and the closure of asylums and other totalizing institutions. On the centenary of Basaglia's birth, we must reason on the state of social and health care not only in the field of mental health. In fact, the rights of women seeking for abortion, the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community, the prison population, and migrants are also on the take.
