AI Article Synopsis

  • The study by Ryder et al. (2020) highlights the role of fragile-X mental retardation protein in regulating the movement of cen mRNA in Drosophila.
  • Improper localization of cen mRNA affects cell division and development, suggesting its critical role in ensuring correct mitotic processes.
  • The research emphasizes the functional significance of mRNA positioning at centrosomes for maintaining proper cell function and development.

Article Abstract

The functional importance of mRNA localization to centrosomes is unclear. Ryder et al. (2020. J. Cell Biol. https://doi.org/10.1083/jcb.202004101) identify fragile-X mental retardation protein as a regulator of centrocortin (cen) mRNA dynamics in Drosophila. Mistargeting of cen impairs division and development, indicating that cen mRNA localization to centrosomes ensures mitotic fidelity.

Serine 31 is a phospho-site unique to the histone H3.3 variant; mitotic phospho-Ser31 is restricted to pericentromeric heterochromatin, and disruption of phospho-Ser31 results in chromosome segregation defects and loss of p53-dependant G cell-cycle arrest. Ser31 is proximal to the H3.

Stem and progenitor cell mitosis is essential for tissue development and homeostasis. How these cells ensure proper chromosome segregation, and thereby maintain mitotic fidelity, in the complex physiological environment of a living animal is poorly understood. Here we use in situ live-cell imaging of C.

Accurate genome inheritance during cell division relies on a complex chromosome segregation mechanism. This process occurs once all the kinetochores of sister chromatids are attached to microtubules emanating from the opposite poles of the mitotic spindle. To control the precision of this mechanism, the Chromosome Passenger Complex (CPC) actively identifies and corrects improper microtubule attachments.

Accurate mitotic progression ensures the fidelity of genome passage. Cdc20 is a key mitotic regulator. It promotes mitotic exit by activating the anaphase-promoting complex or cyclosome (APC/C) and monitors kinetochore-microtubule attachment through activating the spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC).
