Data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study (ECLS-K; N = 6,420; 67.9% White/non-Hispanic, 15% Hispanic, 13% Black/non-Hispanic, 2% Asian, 3% Native American/Alaska Native; 25% of parents' income <$25,000, 25% = $25,001 to $45,000, 29% = $45,001 to $75,000, 20% = $75,001 or greater) were used to test structural equation models in which child externalizing or internalizing problems mediate the relation between parental physical discipline and child literacy development over time. Results show that parents' physical discipline in Kindergarten was associated with lower literacy levels in 8th grade and slower growth in literacy development from K-8. Additionally, parents' physical discipline during Kindergarten predicted more externalizing symptoms 1 year later, which in turn predicted lower literacy skills in eighth grade (partial mediation detected) and lower growth rates in literacy skills over time (complete mediation detected). Overall, parents' physical discipline administered during their child's kindergarten year may have cascading detrimental impacts on child literacy development through externalizing problem behaviors. The distribution of fitness effects (DFE) characterizes the range of selection coefficients from which new mutations are sampled, and thus holds a fundamentally important role in evolutionary genomics. To date, DFE inference in primates has been largely restricted to haplorrhines, with limited data availability leaving the other suborder of primates, strepsirrhines, largely under-explored. To advance our understanding of the population genetics of this important taxonomic group, we here map exonic divergence in aye-ayes ( ) - the only extant member of the Daubentoniidae family of the Strepsirrhini suborder.

This paper examines a recently developed statistical approach for evaluating the effectiveness of vaccination campaigns in terms of deaths averted. The statistical approach makes predictions by comparing death rates in the vaccinated and unvaccinated populations. The statistical approach is preferred for its simplicity and straightforwardness, especially when compared to the difficulties involved when fitting the many parameters of a dynamic SIRD-type model, which may even be an impossible task.

Background: While certain studies have demonstrated that antiviral treatment administered to index patients with influenza can mitigate the transmission within households, the efficacy of anti-SARS-CoV-2 agents in curtailing household transmission remains to be conclusively established.
Methods: A retrospective study conducted from April 2021 to May 2022 across multiple centers in Thailand compared 892 individuals treated with favipiravir to 84 who received standard treatment among mild to moderate COVID-19 index patients. The study focused on the impact of favipiravir treatment in reducing household SARS-CoV-2 transmission by examining the secondary attack rate.
Background: Recent studies have revealed a strong association between the e2 allele of the Apolipoprotein E ( gene and lipid metabolites. In addition, carriers appear to be protected from cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease. This correlation supports the hypothesis that lipids may mediate the protective effect of on cognitive function, thereby providing potential targets for therapeutic intervention.

This article proposed a simultaneous equation model for small area estimation with random area and time-varying effects called the Simultaneous Equation Rao-Yu (SERY) model. In the context of small area estimation, many socioeconomic variables are likely to exhibit not only correlations but also causal relationships. Therefore, it is considered to use simultaneous equation model for indirect estimation method in a small-area.
