This study explores the use of chicken egg white (EW), a rich source of natural proteins, to address challenges in wound healing management. Herein, a novel Zn-infused EW/GelMA (EW/Gel) hybrid hydrogel is developed, featuring an interpenetrating network (IPN) structure, where the first network consists of photo-cross-linked GelMA and the second network consists of Zn-infused EW (Zn-EW) through ion-protein binding. By optimizing the design and formulation, the resulting Zn-EW/Gel hydrogel exhibited enhanced mechanical stability and self-adhesive properties.

Synthesis and Characterization of Photocurable Difunctional Monomers for Medical Applications.

Polymers (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Polymer and Biomaterials Science, Faculty of Chemical Technology and Engineering, West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin, Al. Piastów 45, 70-311 Szczecin, Poland.

Photocurable materials offer a rapid transition from a liquid to a solid state, and have recently received great interest in the medical field. However, while dental resins are very popular, only a few materials have been developed for soft tissue repair. This study aims to synthesize a difunctional methacrylate monomer using a dibutyltin dilaurate which is suitable for the photocuring of soft materials.

Cancer vaccines hold great promise in the fight against cancer. Here, we report an ice-pop making inspired photothermal ultra-swelling microneedle (PUSMN) patch for facilitating and enhancing cancer vaccination. The PUSMN patch consist of an array of microneedles made from photo-crosslinked methacrylated hyaluronic acid and polydopamine, a near-infrared photothermal conversion material, connected to a customized resin handle like an ice-pop stick.

Sequential delivery of IL-10 and icariin using nanoparticle/hydrogel hybrid system for prompting bone defect repair.

December 2024

Shanghai Key Laboratory of Orthopaedic Implants, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, No. 639 Zhizaoju Road, Shanghai, 200011, China.

The treatment of large bone defects remains challenging due to the lack of spatiotemporal management of the immune microenvironment, inflammation response and bone remodeling. To address these issues, we designed and developed a nanoparticle/hydrogel hybrid system that can achieve the combined and sequential delivery of an anti-inflammatory factor (IL-10) and osteogenic drug (icariin, ICA). A photopolymerizable composite hydrogel was prepared by combining gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) and heparin-based acrylated hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels containing IL-10, and poly(dl-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA)-HA nanoparticles loaded with ICA were incorporated into the composite hydrogels.

Photo-Cross-linked DNA Structures Greatly Improves Their Serum Nuclease Resistances and Gene Knock-In Efficiencies.

Small Methods

December 2024

Hefei National Research Center for Physical Sciences at the Microscale, Department of Polymer Science and Engineering, University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, 230026, China.

The stabilization and structural integrity of DNA architectures remain significant challenges in their biomedical applications, particularly when inserting functional units into the genome using long single-stranded DNA (lssDNA). To address these challenges, a site-specific photo-cross-linking method is employed. Single-stranded oligonucleotides, containing one or two photosensitive cyanovinylcarbazole nucleoside (K) molecules, are precisely incorporated and cross-linked at the specific sites of ssDNA through base-pairing, followed by rapid UV irradiation at 365 nm.
