Sesquiterpene lactones, coumarins, phytoecdysones and phenolic compounds are characteristic of the species from the subtribe Centaureinae (Asteraceae). Many of the compounds isolated from plants of the Centaureinae subtribe have strong pharmacological properties. It may be suggested that these compounds' chemical structure might be an indicator of these pharmacological properties. The aim of the study was to describe recent studies in the field of phytotherapy, focusing on compounds isolated from chosen plants of Centaureinae and the possibilities of using them to treat antifungal infections, inhibit serotonin and ease symptoms of seborrhea dermatitis and hyperpigmentation. The results of these biological studies have shown that in the future, extracts from the above-mentioned plant material may be used as active substances in new safe and effective drugs.

Classification of tribe Cardueae in natural subtribes has always been a challenge due to the lack of support of some critical branches in previous phylogenies based on traditional Sanger markers. With the aim to propose a new subtribal delimitation, we applied a Hyb-Seq approach to a set of 76 Cardueae species representing all subtribes and informal groups defined in the tribe, targeting 1061 nuclear conserved orthology loci (COS) designed for Compositae and obtaining chloroplast coding regions as by-product of off-target reads. For the extraction of the target nuclear data, we used two strategies, PHYLUCE and HybPiper, and 776 and 1055 COS loci were recovered with each of them, respectively.

Seven germacranolides - balsamin, izospiciformin, stizolin, 9α-hydroxyparthenolide, 8α-E-(4'-hydroxy)-senecioyloxy-9α-hydroxyparthenolide, stizolicin and 11βH,13-dihydrostizolicin, as well as one undescribed phenol glycoside 3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl) propyl senecioate 3-O-β-glucopyranoside were isolated from the leaves of Stizolophus balsamita growing in Iran. Three coumarins, scoparone, scopoletin, umbelliferone and two guaianolides, cynaropicrin and desacylcynaropicrin 8α-(Z)-(4'-hydroxy-2'-methyl)butenoate (= cebellin F) were isolated from the leaves of Psephellus sibiricus. Phytochemical profile of Stizolophus balsamita growing in Iran differs from that of Stizolophus balsamita growing in Kazakhstan.

Classical biological control of invasive alien weeds depends on the use of arthropod herbivores that are sufficiently host specific to avoid risk of injuring nontarget plants. Host plant specificity is usually evaluated by using a combination of behavioral and developmental experiments under choice, no-choice and field conditions. Secondary plant compounds are likely to have an important influence on host plant specificity.
