A new hybrid lead(ii) halide perovskite, (TzH)2PbCl4, ([TzH+] = 1,2,4-triazolium), adopts a (001)-oriented layered perovskite structure, which can be considered as derived from the n = 1 Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) type. Variable temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals a structural phase transition in the region 125 K < T < 173 K between a high temperature, high symmetry polymorph, space group Cmcm, and a low temperature, low symmetry chiral polymorph, space group P212121, which has a tripled unit cell volume. UV-Vis spectra suggest a band gap of 3.30 eV for (TzH)2PbCl4. A second polymorph of the bromide analogue, (TzH)2PbBr4-II, is also reported, and structural relationships between all three variants are discussed.

Multilayer thin films composed of dielectric BaCaZrTiO (BCZT) and oxygen-deficient BCZT (BCZT-OD) were fabricated on (001)-oriented NSTO substrates using the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Unlike conventional approaches to energy storage capacitors, which primarily focus on compositional or structural modifications, this study explored the influence of the layer sequence and periodicity. The interface between the NSTO substrate and the BCZT-OD layer forms a Schottky barrier, resulting in electric field redistribution across the sublayers of the BCZT/BCZT-OD//(1P) thin film.

Ferroelectric properties of HfZrO are strongly correlated with its crystallographic orientation, with the [001] direction serving as the polar axis. However, the epitaxial growth of highly polar-axis-oriented HfZrO layers with pronounced ferroelectricity is rarely reported. Here epitaxial (001)-oriented HfZrO thin films grown by atomic layer epitaxy (ALE) is demonstrated, which achieve a state-of-the-art ferroelectric polarization up to 78.

The metal-insulator (MI) transition of vanadium dioxide (VO) is effectively modulated by oxygen vacancies, which decrease the transition temperature and insulating resistance. Oxygen vacancies in thin films can be driven by oxygen transport using electrochemical potential. This study delves into the role of crystallographic channels in VO in facilitating oxygen transport and the subsequent tuning of electrical properties.

Unfolding the Challenges To Prepare Single Crystalline Complex Oxide Membranes by Solution Processing.

Institut de Ciència de Materials de Barcelona, ICMAB-CSIC, Campus UAB, 08193 Bellaterra, Spain.

The ability to prepare single crystalline complex oxide freestanding membranes has opened a new playground to access new phases and functionalities not available when they are epitaxially bound to the substrates. The water-soluble SrAlO (SAO) sacrificial layer approach has proven to be one of the most promising pathways to prepare a wide variety of single crystalline complex oxide membranes, typically by high vacuum deposition techniques. Here, we present solution processing, also named chemical solution deposition (CSD), as a cost-effective alternative deposition technique to prepare freestanding membranes identifying the main processing challenges and how to overcome them.

In this study, we investigate the changes in the crystalline structure of MBE-deposited SrTiO layers on Si with different deviations from Sr/Ti stoichiometry as deposited but also after annealing at high temperatures (>600 °C). We show that as-grown 15 nm thick non-stochiometric SrTiO layers present surprisingly lower FWHM values of the (002) omega diffraction peak compared to fully stoichiometric layers of similar thickness. This can misleadingly point to superior crystalline quality of such non-stochiometric layers.
