There is an increasing interest in substituting current packaging films with biologically-derived films without compromising mechanical properties and hydrophobicity. In this work, the esterified galactomannan (E-GM) films with good hydrophobicity, excellent oxygen barrier performance and high tensile mechanical strength were synthesized using anhydride esterification method prior to film formation. The hydrophobicity, mechanical properties, barrier properties, thermal stability and ultraviolet absorption of the prepared films were determined to fully investigate the features of galactomannan-based films. The results indicated that GM films can be successfully obtained by esterification. Compared to neat GM film, E-GM-1.5 film (acetic anhydride to GM of 1.5:1) achieved the highest degree of esterification (0.05), hydrophobicity (107°) and mechanical strength (92.0 MPa). In addition, the esterified GM films had lower toxicity for macrophages cells. The prepared E-GM films may provide more opportunities for further advancement and applications in the development of food packaging from natural resources.

Chromophores incorporated into rigid polymer matrices may exhibit novel photophysical properties distinct from those in liquid solutions. In this work, we explored the decay path of the second ππ* state (2ππ*) of riboflavin in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solutions and films with various acidities. Highly efficient internal conversion from 2ππ* to the lowest ππ* state (1ππ*) induced by slight in-plane motion is demonstrated in all PVA solutions and films, irrespective of environmental acidity and rigidification.

Most current highly efficient organic solar cells utilize small molecules like Y6 and its derivatives as electron acceptors in the photoactive layer. In this work, a small molecule acceptor, SC8-IT4F, is developed through outer side chain engineering on the terminal thiophene of a conjugated 6,12-dihydro-dithienoindeno[2,3-d:2',3'-d']-s-indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene (IDTT) central core. Compared to the reference molecule C8-IT4F, which lacks outer side chains, SC8-IT4F displays notable differences in molecule geometry (as shown by simulations), thermal behavior, single-crystal packing, and film morphology.

This review focuses on antimicrobial packaging for food safety, critically examining the activity and efficacy of cannabinoids against commonly found microorganisms and exploring their antimicrobial mechanisms. Specifically, the review considers cannabinoids derived from industrial hemp plants, which are characterized by low levels of psychoactive components. It also outlines viable strategies to control the sustained release of cannabinoids from the packaging, enabling extended storage and enhanced safety of food products.

Porous lead iodide (PbI) film is crucial for the complete reaction between PbI and ammonium salts in sequential-deposition technology so as to achieve high crystallinity perovskite film. Herein, it is found that the tensile stress in tin (IV) oxide (SnO) electron transport layer (ETL) is a key factor influencing the morphology and crystallization of PbI films. Focusing on this, lithium trifluoromethanesulfonate (LiOTf) is used as an interfacial modifier in the SnO/PbI interface to decrease the tensile stress to reduce the necessary critical Gibbs free energy for PbI nuclei formation.

A novel additive method to boost the Seebeck coefficient of doped conjugated polymers without a significant loss in electrical conductivity is demonstrated. Perovskite (CsPbBr) quantum dots (QDs) passivated by ligands with long alkyl chains are mixed with a conjugated polymer in a solution phase to form polymer-QD blend films. Solution sequential doping of the blend film with AuCl solution not only doped the conjugated polymer but also decomposed the QDs, resulting in a doped conjugated polymer film embedded with separated ions dissociated from the QDs.
