Plant alkaloids are used in a variety of medicines, such as anti-cancer drugs and analgesics. Among these plant alkaloids, galanthamine is an Amaryllidaceae type alkaloid with acetylcholinesterase inhibition activity used in the treatment of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Although the chemical synthesis of galanthamine has been successfully achieved, is the main source of its production.

Premise: Plants generate a wide array of signals such as olfactory cues to attract and manipulate the response of pollinators. The present study addresses the temporal patterns of scent emission as an additional dimension to the scent composition. The expectation is that divergent floral function is reflected in divergent qualitative and temporal emission patterns.

We have developed a rapid genus identification method for poisonous plants. The real-time PCR using the TaqMan probe method was employed for detection, with the amplified targets being the "trnL (UAA)-intron" or "trnL-trnF intergenic spacer" regions of chloroplast DNA. The targeted plants were selected six genera (Aconitum, Colchicum, Veratrum, Brugmansia, Scopolia and Narcissus), which have been implicated in many instances of food poisoning in Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on var. chinensis, a plant known for its pharmaceutical and ornamental uses, by analyzing primary and secondary metabolites in different in vitro tissues (callus, adventitious roots, and shoots) using advanced chromatography techniques.
  • The researchers optimized in vitro culture methods using hormonal treatments on bulbs to promote growth and metabolite production, with specific concentrations found to be most effective.
  • Results indicated that shoots and roots cultivated in a particular nutrient medium yielded the highest levels of metabolites, suggesting that this method could be beneficial for mass-producing valuable compounds from the plant.
