We determine the effects of the α-gel (α-form hydrated crystal) domain size on the viscosity of water-diluted α-gels consisting of the N-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]docosanamide (APA-22) L-lactic acid salt, 1-octadecanol (COH), and water. A decrease in the COH mole content results in increased domain size and viscosity of the water-diluted α-gel system. Additionally, when a sample is prepared by slow cooling and/or at low stirring speed, the domain size and viscosity of the water-diluted α-gel system increase. A similar increase in the domain size and viscosity of the α-gel system is observed for annealed samples. The observed change in the α-gel domain size is explained by the crystal growth theory.

Kolmogorov-Hinze Scales in Turbulent Superfluids.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

Department of Engineering Science, University of Electro-Communications, Tokyo 182-8585, Japan.

When a two-component mixture of immiscible fluids is stirred, the fluids are split into smaller domains with more vigorous stirring. We numerically investigate the sizes of such domains in a fully developed turbulent state of a two-component superfluid stirred with energy input rate ε. For the strongly immiscible condition, the typical domain size is shown to be proportional to ε^{-2/5}, as predicted by the Kolmogorov-Hinze theory in classical fluids.

Background: AT-rich interaction domain 4B (ARID4B) is a transcriptional activator that regulates the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT pathway in prostate cancer. However, the role of ARID4B in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has remained unclear.

Methods: This study included 162 patients who had undergone primary hepatic resection for HCC between 2008 and 2019.

Background: Synucleinopathies lack cures. Antibody therapies targeting α-synuclein aim to inhibit aggregation and enhance degradation, but have limited brain entry because of size (150kDa). Smaller single-domain antibodies (sdAbs, 15kDa) have substantially improved brain uptake.

Background: Several lines of evidence now suggest that ABCA1 plays a role in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Rare variants on ABCA1 increased AD risk in a large genetic study, and mouse models suggest that increasing ABCA1 activity can reverse signs of AD pathology. While there is growing consensus that ABCA1 and ApoE directly interact, it is unclear how APOE genotype affects this interaction in the context of neurodegeneration.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Weill Cornell Medicine, New York, NY, USA.

Background: Different subtypes of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) are shown to have differential patterns of tau deposition on the cerebral cortex. However, for cognitively unimpaired elders the spatial specificity of tau deposition has not been fully investigated.

Objective: We aim to show that tau deposition in different brain regions is uniquely associated with performance in different cognitive domains.
