In their paper Doerig et al. argue that we should put the hard problem aside and focus on empirical data to solve the 'easy' problems of consciousness - finding the neural and functional correlates of consciousness. In other words 'shut up and measure'. This has worked well with other thorny issues, such as explaining life, so why not adopt this approach here? We argue that despite the popularity of this view it is not feasible. In order to collect any consciousness data one needs to take an implicit or explicit stance on the hard problem.

Electrochemical CO reduction offers a promising method of converting renewable electrical energy into valuable hydrocarbon compounds vital to hard-to-abate sectors. Significant progress has been made on the lab scale, but scale-up demonstrations remain limited. Because of the low energy efficiency of CO reduction, we suspect that significant thermal gradients may develop in industrially relevant dimensions.

Nonsmooth nonconvex optimization problems are pivotal in engineering practice due to the inherent nonsmooth and nonconvex characteristics of many real-world complex systems and models. The nonsmoothness and nonconvexity of the objective and constraint functions bring great challenges to the design and convergence analysis of the optimization algorithms. This paper presents a smooth gradient approximation neural network for such optimization problems, in which a smooth approximation technique with time-varying control parameter is introduced for handling nonsmooth nonregular objective functions.
