Radiotherapy resistance is one of the main reasons for the dismal clinical outcome of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Therefore, clarifying the targets and molecular mechanisms of radiotherapy resistance in ESCC is of great theoretical and clinical significance to enhance the efficacy of radiotherapy. In this study, GPR37 was identified as a key factor facilitating ESCC radiosensitization.

Background: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic inflammatory process of the esophagus often associated with structural and motility problems. Previous studies have shown an increased prevalence in males over females, however there is little data exploring the risk of esophageal complications among genders, which may be indicative of differences in disease severity.

Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study using National Inpatient Sample data including adults hospitalized between 2016 and 2020 presenting with EoE.

MFAP2 upregulation promotes ESCC metastasis via FAK-AKT signaling pathway.

FASEB J

December 2024

Department of Laboratory Medicine, Shanghai Chest Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, People's Republic of China.

Metastasis is the leading cause of mortality from esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). By the time of diagnosis, most ESCC tumors have already invaded the lymph nodes or distant organs; however, it has been challenging to identify and confirm genes with a crucial role in ESCC metastasis. The microfibrillar-associated protein 2 (MFAP2) is upregulated in human ESCC, and its expression level was positively associated with poor overall and disease-free survival.

Background: Sperm-associated antigen 5 (SPAG5) is a mitotic spindle protein crucial for coordinating the separation of sister chromatids into daughter cells. Increasing evidence suggests that SPAG5 is overexpressed in various malignancies, functioning as an oncogene. However, research specifically examining SPAG5 in esophageal cancer remains limited.

Exploring the relaxation effects of Coptis chinensis and berberine on the lower esophageal sphincter: potential strategies for LES motility disorders.

BMC Complement Med Ther

Department of Pediatrics, E-Da Hospital, I-Shou University, No. 1, Yi-Da Road, Yan-Chao District, Kaohsiung City, 82445, Taiwan, R.O.C..

Article Synopsis
  • Esophageal achalasia is a condition that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), leading to symptoms like difficulty swallowing, chest pain, and weight loss, with traditional treatments providing limited relief.
  • This study investigates the effectiveness of Traditional Chinese Medicine, specifically Coptis chinensis and its active component berberine, in promoting LES relaxation as a potential alternative treatment.
  • Results indicate that both C. chinensis extract and berberine significantly relax the LES by activating potassium channels, suggesting further research is warranted for their therapeutic use in esophageal disorders like achalasia.
