Article Abstract

Static visual attributes such as color and shape are used with great success in visual charts designed to be displayed in static, hard-copy form. However, nowadays digital displays become ubiquitous in the visualization of any form of data, lifting the confines of static presentations. In this article, we propose incorporating data-driven animations to bring static charts to life, with the purpose of encoding and emphasizing certain attributes of the data. We lay out a design space for data-driven animated effects and experiment with three versatile effects, marching ants, geometry deformation and gradual appearance. For each, we provide practical details regarding their mode of operation and extent of interaction with existing visual encodings. We examine the impact and effectiveness of our enhancements through an empirical user study to assess preference as well as gauge the influence of animated effects on human perception in terms of speed and accuracy of visual understanding.

Background: In developing countries evidences regarding pulmonary hypertension (PH) in rheumatic heart disease (RHD) patients are lacking, despite being responsible for significant morbidity and mortality. As a result, identifying the factors that influence PH is crucial to improve the quality of care.

Objective: To determine prevalence of pulmonary hypertension and its associated factors among rheumatic heart disease patients at the public hospitals of Bahir Dar city, Ethiopia.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed the safety and accuracy of static computer-assisted corticotomy surgery (sCACS) versus freehand piezocision through a randomized in vitro approach with 260 corticotomies on 20 models.
  • sCACS showed significantly less risk of damaging root surfaces (2.21 times less likely) and performed better in accuracy across multiple measurements compared to freehand techniques, indicating less deviation from digital planning.
  • The findings suggest that sCACS is a safer and more precise option for performing corticotomies, emphasizing the importance of using surgical guides in tight spaces to minimize root damage in clinical scenarios.

Background: There is limited literature concerning the use of bi-vector traction to a Mayfield following posterior cervical fusion with respect to cervical alignment parameters. The objective of this study was to determine how variability of intra-operative fixation methods for posterior cervical fusion affects post-operative cervical sagittal alignment parameters.

Methods: After institutional review board (IRB) approval, retrospective chart review of a total of 54 patients who underwent posterior cervical fusion from July 2017 to December 2019 was conducted.

Explicit construction of Penrose diagrams for black hole to white hole transition with spacelike thin shells.

In this article, we explicitly construct the coordinates associated with the Penrose diagram in spacetimes connected via a spacelike thin shell in the following two examples: the generalized black-to-white hole bounce with mass difference and the Schwarzschild-to-de Sitter transition. We point out the issue of the first junction condition in the Penrose diagram constructed by cutting and pasting analytically known metrics with spherical symmetry by a static spacelike thin shell. With the goal of a global conformal coordinate chart associated with the corresponding Penrose diagram without discontinuity at the thin shell, we give a procedure consisting of three conformal transformations that serve different purposes.

Postoperative critical care management of congenital heart disease patients requires prompt intervention when the patient deviates significantly from clinician-determined vital sign and hemodynamic goals. Current monitoring systems only allow for static thresholds to be set on individual variables, despite the expectations that these signals change as the patient recovers and that variables interact. To address this incongruency, we have employed statistical process monitoring (SPM) techniques originally developed to monitor batch industrial processes to monitor high-frequency vital sign and hemodynamic data to establish multivariate trajectory maps for patients with d-transposition of the great arteries following the arterial switch operation.
