The deep and ultra deep clastic reservoir is characterized by strong reservoir heterogeneity and complicated reservoir-forming characteristics for its high degree of diagenetic stage and the complexity of diagenesis. In order to better study the diagenetic evolution of deep and ultra deep reservoir in the burial process, a fine subsection scheme of 36 diagenetic micro-stage (DS) in diageneitic process was proposed based on paleotemperature (T), vitrinite reflectance (Ro%) and proportion of smectite in illite/smectite interstratified minerals (I/S-S%). Taking the Oligocene Huagang Formation in the Xihu sag of the East China Sea Basin as an example, the diagentic stage IIA1-IIA2-IIB was identified mainly by means of formation temperature data (T), homogenization temperature of fluid inclusion (Th), vitrinite analysis and clay mineral X-ray diffraction method. On this basis, diagenetic evolution using the fine subsection scheme in geological time were conducted. This fine division of diagenetic stage could bring accurate insight into porosity evolution history, hydrocarbon charging periods, diagenetic and reservoir-forming characteristics of low-permeability and tight sandstone.

Incorporation of animal-based foods into early hominin diets has been hypothesized to be a major catalyst of many important evolutionary events, including brain expansion. However, direct evidence of the onset and evolution of animal resource consumption in hominins remains elusive. In this study, we attempt to illustrate fossil vertebrate dental tissue geochemistry and, by inference, its extent of diagenetic alteration, using quantitative, semi-quantitative and optical tools to evaluate bioapatite preservation. We present visual comparisons of elemental compositions in fish and plesiosaur dental remains ranging in age from Silurian to Cretaceous, based on a combination of micro-scale optical cathodoluminescence (CL) observations (optical images and scanning electron microscope) with minor, trace and rare earth element (REE) compositions (EDS, maps and REE profiles), as a tool for assessing diagenetic processes and biomineral preservation during fossilization of vertebrate dental apatite. Tissue-selective REE values have been obtained using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), indicating areas of potential REE enrichment, combined with cathodoluminescence (CL) analysis.

The rover explored the region between the orbitally defined phyllosilicate-bearing Glen Torridon trough and the overlying layered sulfate-bearing unit, called the "clay-sulfate transition region." Samples were drilled from the top of the fluviolacustrine Glasgow member of the Carolyn Shoemaker formation (CSf) to the eolian Contigo member of the Mirador formation (MIf) to assess in situ mineralogical changes with stratigraphic position. The Sample Analysis at Mars-Evolved Gas Analysis (SAM-EGA) instrument analyzed drilled samples within this region to constrain their volatile chemistry and mineralogy.
