Within a sufficiently large bacterial population, some members will naturally adopt an alternate, metabolically-active state that favors small molecule synthesis over cell division. These isogenic "tolerant" subpopulations have variable responses during antibiotic exposure and can remain viable in the presence of typically bactericidal concentrations. In this study, we determine the ability of typical and atypical antistaphylococcal therapies to reduce the viability of mupirocin-induced tolerant bacteria. Overall, tolerance-induced staphylococci exhibited a markedly decreased rate and extent of killing following antibiotic exposure. However, oritavancin remained effective at maintaining a similar extent of killing. Further studies to investigate the role of oritavancin against recurrent or relapse staphylococcal infection are warranted.

Periodontal disease stands the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. While scaling and root planning is considered the "gold standard" treatment, it is often insufficient in efficiently eliminating anaerobic bacteria from deep periodontal pockets. In this work, an antibiotic-free and photo-curing hyaluronic acid-Janus (H-Janus) antibacterial pack was developed to inhibit the growth and colonization of residual bacteria within the pockets for reducing the recurrence of periodontitis.

Pertussis is an important public health and clinical issue in China currently. Macrolide resistance in is a serious challenge to prevent and manage pertussis in China. Early, timely and effective antimicrobial therapy plays an important role in alleviating disease, reducing complications and severe diseases, eliminating carriers and reducing secondary transmission, and implementing post-exposure chemoprophylaxis in special scenarios is also necessary to protect individuals at high risk of severe diseases.

Background: Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) is recognized as a common clinical conditional pathogen with bla gene-mediated multidrug-resistance that is a significant threat to public health safety. Timely and effective infection control measures are needed to prevent their spread.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of CRAB patients at three teaching hospitals from 2019 to 2022.

Background: One of the main issues facing public health with microbial infections is antibiotic resistance. Nanoparticles (NPs) are among the best alternatives to overcome this issue. Silver nanoparticle (AgNPs) preparations are widely applied to treat multidrug-resistant pathogens.

Despite ongoing antibiotic development, evolution of resistance may render candidate antibiotics ineffective. Here we studied in vitro emergence of resistance to 13 antibiotics introduced after 2017 or currently in development, compared with in-use antibiotics. Laboratory evolution showed that clinically relevant resistance arises within 60 days of antibiotic exposure in Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, priority Gram-negative ESKAPE pathogens.
