By utilizing the 2-hydroxyisophthalic acid (HipO) ligand, 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) featuring rare O-bridged [Ln]-magnetic building blocks (MBBs), [Ln(ipO)(DMF)(HO)] [Ln = Gd (), Dy (); DMF = ,-dimethylformamide], were rationally designed and synthesized. When the reaction solvents that behave as terminal ligands were changed, the coordination geometries of Ln ions and the arrangement fashion of [Ln]-MBBs for these MOFs were modified accordingly. Another type of 2D MOF of [Ln(ipO)(HO)]·2HO [Ln = Gd (), Dy ()] was thus obtained. MOFs and exhibited favorable magnetocaloric effect, whose maximum -Δ values reach 30.0 and 31.7 J kg K, respectively. None of the single-molecule-magnet (SMM) behavior was observed in . However, from to , the change of the terminal coordinated solvents brought obvious improvement of the magnetic properties. MOF showed interesting relaxation behavior, in which dual relaxation was only visible under weak direct-current fields, and its highest effective energy barrier () reached up to 243 K. Ab initio calculations revealed the tuning mechanism of the terminal coordinated solvents. Their change optimized the arrangements of the magnetic axis of the Dy centers in both each MBB and the whole framework, thus improving the magnetic anisotropy and magnetic interactions of the system. Significantly, within the [Dy]-MBBs of , the angle made by the individual magnetic axis and Dy···Dy' line is nearly 0°. This case favoring a high SMM performance not only was scarcely achieved in discrete {Ln}-SMMs with numerous members but also has never been observed in any MBB-based MOFs as far as we know.

Na-K-Cl cotransporters functions as an anion importers, regulating trans-epithelial chloride secretion, cell volume, and renal salt reabsorption. Loop diuretics, including furosemide, bumetanide, and torsemide, antagonize both NKCC1 and NKCC2, and are first-line medicines for the treatment of edema and hypertension. NKCC1 activation by the molecular crowding sensing WNK kinases is critical if cells are to combat shrinkage during hypertonic stress; however, how phosphorylation accelerates NKCC1 ion transport remains unclear.

Age-related dopamine (DA) neuron loss is a primary feature of Parkinson's disease. However, whether similar biological processes occur during healthy aging, but to a lesser degree, remains unclear. We therefore determined whether midbrain DA neurons degenerate during aging in mice and humans.

Gluconeogenesis, the reciprocal pathway of glycolysis, is an energy-consuming process that generates glycolytic intermediates from non-carbohydrate sources. In this study, we demonstrate that robust and efficient gluconeogenesis in bacteria relies on the allosteric inactivation of pyruvate kinase, the enzyme responsible for the irreversible final step of glycolysis. Using the model bacterium as an example, we discovered that pyruvate kinase activity is inhibited during gluconeogenesis via its extra C-terminal domain (ECTD), which is essential for autoinhibition and metabolic regulation.

Background: The PalliPed project is a nationwide, observational, cross-sectional study designed with the aim of providing a constantly updated national database for the census and monitoring of specialized pediatric palliative care (PPC) activities in Italy. This paper presents the results of the first monitoring phase of the PalliPed project, which was developed through the PalliPed 2022-2023 study, to update current knowledge on the provision of specialized PPC services in Italy.
Methods: Italian specialized PPC centers/facilities were invited to participate and asked to complete a self-reporting, ad-hoc, online survey regarding their clinical activity in 2022-2023, in the revision of the data initially collected in the first PalliPed study of 2021.

Under salt stress, plasma membrane proteins regulate ion homeostasis and the balance between reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this study, we investigated the functions of two small membrane proteins-MsRCI2B (tailless) and MsRCI2E (tailed)-encoded by the RCI2 (Rare Cold Inducible 2) gene family in Medicago sativa (alfalfa). We identified the distinct subcellular localization and expression patterns of these proteins under salt stress.
