The best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP), derived from the linear mixed model (LMM), has been popularly used to estimate animal and plant breeding values (BVs) for a few decades. Conventional BLUP has a constraint that BVs are estimated from the assumed covariance among unknown BVs, namely conventional BLUP assumes that its covariance matrix is a , in which is a coefficient that leads to the minimum mean square error of the LMM, and is a genetic relationship matrix. The uncertainty regarding the use of in conventional BLUP was recognized by past studies, but it has not been sufficiently investigated. This study was motivated to answer the following question: is it indeed reasonable to use a in conventional BLUP? The mathematical investigation concluded: (i) the use of a in conventional BLUP biases the estimated BVs, and (ii) the objective BLUP, mathematically derived from the LMM, has the same representation as the least squares.

The complexity of selecting for drought tolerance in cassava, influenced by multiple factors, demands innovative approaches to plant selection. This study aimed to identify cassava clones with tolerance to water stress by employing truncated selection and selection based on genomic values for population improvement and genotype evaluation . The Best Linear Unbiased Predictions (BLUPs), Genomic Estimated Breeding Values (GEBVs), and Genomic Estimated Genotypic Values (GETGVs) were obtained based on different prediction models via genomic selection.

A method of calculating weighted values for objective traits from the phenotypic records of all animals in a population was devised as an alternative to the conventional method of calculating weighted values from a family selection index. The genetic improvement of this method was verified by Monte Carlo computer simulation. A base population consisting of 10 males and 50 females, and five separate generations, other than the base population that had been randomly selected, was bred for two traits with different heritabilities.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the growth dynamics of two maize populations under various environmental conditions using advanced phenotyping techniques.
  • Two modeling approaches, Gaussian peak and functional principal component analysis, were utilized to analyze the Normalized Green-Red Difference Index (NGRDI) scores, revealing strong correlations and significant variability among growth patterns.
  • The identification of common quantitative trait loci (QTLs) linked to candidate genes emphasizes their vital roles in plant development, enhancing knowledge of plant-environment interactions and informing future crop improvement strategies.

The validation of estimated breeding values from single-step genomic BLUP (ssGBLUP) is an important topic, as more and more countries and animal populations are currently changing their genomic prediction to single-step. The objective of this work was to compare different methods to validate single-step genomic breeding values (GEBV). The investigations were carried out using a simulation study based on the German-Austrian-Czech Fleckvieh population.

Genomic selection for morphological and yield-related traits using genome-wide SNPs in oil palm.

Centro de Investigación Tibaitatá, Corporación Colombiana de Investigación Agropecuaria (Agrosavia), Mosquera, Cundinamarca Colombia.

Article Synopsis
  • Oil palm is a critical oil crop, with Colombia being the fourth largest producer, primarily using interspecific hybrids (OxG) for production.
  • Conventional breeding takes a long time (up to 20 years) to develop new varieties, making genomic selection (GS) a promising alternative for faster and improved breeding results.
  • The study evaluated various traits in hybrids and backcrosses, finding that GS models showed better prediction accuracies for certain traits, indicating the importance of genetic correlations and the potential for GS in selecting superior parent lines for oil palm breeding.
