In the present study, we newly synthesized three types of novel fullerene derivatives: pyridinium-type derivatives trans-3a and 4a-5b, piperidinium-type derivative 9, and proline-type derivatives 10a-12. Among the assessed compounds, 5a, 10e, 10f, 10i, 11a-d, and 12 were found to inhibit both HIV reverse transcriptase and HIV protease (HIV-PR), with IC values in the low micromolar range being observed. Regarding HIV-PR inhibition activity, proline-type derivatives 11a-11d and 12, bearing an alkyl chain between the hydroxylmethylcarbonyl (HMC) moiety and pyrrolidine ring, were more potent than other derivatives. This result might indicate that connecting HMC moieties with proline-type fullerene derivatives through properly sized alkyl chain leads to improved HIV-PR inhibitory activity.

Fullerenols, a water-soluble polyhydroxy derivative of fullerene, hold promise in medical and materials science due to their unique properties. However, concerns about their potential embryotoxicity remain. Using a pregnancy mouse model and metabolomics analysis, our findings reveal that fullerenols exposure during pregnancy not only significantly reduced mice placental weight and villi thickness, but also altered the classes and concentrations of metabolites in the mouse placenta.

Organic photovoltaics (OPVs) have improved greatly in recent years in pursuit for efficient and sustainable energy conversion methods. Specifically, utilizing quantum chemistry approaches such as density functional theory (DFT), the electronic structures, energy levels, and charge transport characteristics of donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) systems based on non-fullerene donor and acceptor molecules have been examined and synthesized. Non-fullerene acceptors offer several advantages over traditional fullerene-based materials, such as enhanced light absorption, modifiable energy levels, and reduced recombination losses.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDCs) can be combined with organic semiconductors to form hybrid van der Waals heterostructures. Specially, non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) stand out due to their excellent absorption and exciton diffusion properties. Here, we couple monolayer tungsten diselenide (ML-WSe) with two well performing NFAs, ITIC, and IT-4F (fluorinated ITIC) to achieve hybrid architectures.

Photodynamic therapy is an important tool in modern medicine due to its effectiveness, safety, and the ability to provide targeted treatment for a range of diseases. Photodynamic therapy utilizes photosensitizers to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS). Fullerenes can be used as photosensitizers to produce ROS in high quantum yields.

In silico methods are increasingly important in predicting the ecotoxicity of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs), encompassing both individual and mixture toxicity predictions. It is widely recognized that ENMs trigger oxidative stress effects by generating intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), serving as a key mechanism in their cytotoxicity studies. However, existing in silico methods still face significant challenges in predicting the oxidative stress effects induced by ENMs.
