A design-based dynamic simulation tool was developed to evaluate the effects of altered operation conditions on the performance of a landfill leachate treating pre-anoxic oxidation ditch folowed by external ultra filtration and nano filtration membranesby using the actual influent data and operational constants collected for 18 months. In the summer of 2017, the MBR suffered from reduced membrane fluxes due to deterioration of activated sludge flocs after the failure of flow booster providing the internal circulation and decreasing influent C/N ratio. Although two external pumps were activated in place of the broken flow booster, the required internal recirculation ratio (IR) predicted by the simulation could not be provided. It was concluded that due to low IR, the activated sludge retaining longer in the anoxic tank lost its floc integrity and caused decreased membrane fluxes. Simulation findings also showed that if the COD/N ratio drops below 4.8, no matter how high the IR is, it is unlikely to achieve a NOx-N concentration below 30 mg/l in the effluent. On the other hand, contrary to expectations, both the actual and estimated nitrification efficiencies were very high due to the moderately high temperature (>20 °C) and DO (2-3 mg/l) values in the aerobic basin.

Objective: The study aims to elucidate the mechanisms underlying plaque growth by analyzing the variations in hemodynamic parameters within the plaque region of patients' carotid arteries before and after the development of atherosclerotic lesions.
Methods: The study enrolls 25 patients with common carotid artery stenosis and 25 with tandem carotid artery stenosis. Based on pathological analysis, three-dimensional models of the actual blood vessels before and after the lesion are constructed for two patients within a two-year period.

Respiratory interventions including noninvasive ventilation, continuous positive airway pressure and high-flow nasal oxygen generated infectious aerosols may increase risk of airborne disease (SARS-CoV-2, influenza virus) transmission to healthcare workers. We developed and tested a prototype portable UV-C device to sterilize high flows of viral-contaminated air from a simulated patient source at airflow rates of up to 100 l/m. Our device consisted of a central quartz tube surrounded 6 high-output UV-C lamps, within a larger cylinder allowing recirculation past the UV-C lamps a second time before exiting the device.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a rare but highly malignant carcinoma of bile duct epithelial cells with a poor prognosis. The major risk factors of CCA carcinogenesis and progression are cholestatic liver diseases. The key feature of primary sclerosing cholangitis and primary biliary cholangitis is chronic cholestasis, which means a slowdown of hepatocyte secretion of biliary lipids and metabolites into bile as well as a slowdown of enterohepatic circulation (bile acid recirculation) of bile acids with dysbiosis of the gut microbiome, which was shown to lead to enterohepatic recirculation and an increase of toxic secondary bile acids.

Purpose: Significant improvements in the prognosis for young patients with Primary Immunodeficiency Diseases (PID) and Autoinflammatory Disorders (AID), which together make up the majority of Inborn Errors of Immunity (IEI), have resulted in the need for optimisation of transition and transfer of care to adult services. Effective transition is crucial to improve health outcomes and treatment compliance among patients. Evaluations of existing transition programmes in European health centres identified the absence of disease-specific transition guidelines for PID and AID, as a challenge to the transition process.
