A novel series of benzimidazole derivatives with methoxylated aryl groups was designed and synthesized as molecules with potential cytotoxic activity. In vitro cytotoxic activity over HCT-116 cells showed that N-(benzimidazothiazolone)acetamides 11a, 11b and 11c were found to be the most cytotoxic compounds compared camptothecin (CPT). The tested compounds had a dual topoisomerase I-β (Topo I-β) and tubulin inhibiting activities when compared to CPT and Podophyllotoxin (Podo) where, compounds l0a, l0b, 11a and 11b exhibited a potent inhibitory activity on Topo I-β enzyme in nano-molar concentration, on the other hand, compounds 12b and 13b exhibited the best inhibitory activity β-tubulin polymerization. Results of the cell cycle analysis as well as the results of annexin-V on HCT-116 cells showed that benzimidazothiazoles 12b and 13b had a pro-apoptotic activity higher than CPT by 1.33- and 1.30-folds, respectively. Moreover, the concentration of p53, Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and caspase 3/7 increased in compounds l0b, 11b, l2b, 13b, especially, compounds 11b and 13b exhibited an increased level of these mediators than CPT. Finally, compound 11b regulated the radiosensitizing activity of the HCT-116 cells by modulating the chromosomal instability.

We have shown that palladium-catalyzed cascade processes provide modular access to rigid quinoline-containing tetracyclic amines. This modular approach enables fine-tuning of the through-space charge transfer (TSCT) state formation between the lone pair localized on the nitrogen atom in the cage moiety and the quinoline moiety by variation of both the intramolecular -aryl distance and quinoline substitution. Decreasing this -aryl distance enhances the formation of the TSCT species, giving control over the emission color and photoluminescence quantum yield.

The natural heterogeneity of guaiacyl (G) and syringyl (S) compounds resulting from lignin processing hampers their direct use as plant-based chemicals and materials. Herein, we explore six short polyphenol oxidases (PPOs) from lignocellulose-degrading ascomycetes for their capacity to react with G-type and S-type phenolic compounds. All six PPOs catalyze the ortho-hydroxylation of G-type compounds (guaiacol, vanillic acid, and ferulic acid), forming the corresponding methoxy-ortho-diphenols.

Isodecyl diphenyl phosphate (IDDP) is among the emerging aromatic organophosphate esters (aryl-OPEs) that pose risks to both human beings and other organisms. This study aims to investigate the translocation and biotransformation behavior of IDDP in rice and the rhizosphere microbiome through hydroponic exposure (the duration of hydroponic exposure was 10 days). The rhizosphere microbiome 9-FY was found to efficiently eliminate IDDP, thereby reducing its uptake in rice tissues and mitigating the negative impact of IDDP on rice growth.

A family of titanium complexes (-) with the general formula LTiCl supported by tridentate phenoxyimine [ONO] ligands (-) bearing bulky sidearms, were synthesized by treating the corresponding ligands with stoichiometric amount of TiCl. All the ligands and complexes were well characterized by H and C NMR spectroscopies, in which - methoxyl groups on -aryl moieties shifted to downfield, corroborating the successful coordination reaction. Structural optimization by DFT calculations revealed that one of the phenyl groups on dibenzhydryl moiety could form π-π stacking interaction with the salicylaldimine plane, because of which the obtained titanium complexes revealed good thermal stabilities for high-temperature polymerization of ethylene.

Emerging classes of dioxin-like compounds (DLCs) like hydroxylated/methoxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (HO-/MeO-PBDEs) and polychlorinated diphenyl sulfides (PCDPSs) could lead to diverse adverse outcomes in humans and wildlife, yet knowledge gaps exist in their molecular mechanisms associated with different structures following early life environmental exposure. This study integrated a genetic knockout technique and concentration-dependent reduced zebrafish transcriptome approach (CRZT) to unravel the toxicological pathways underpinning developmental toxicity of four HO-/MeO-PBDEs and five PCDPSs at environmentally relevant doses. Generally, the dependence of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) on the embryotoxicity and transcriptomic potencies induced by the HO-PBDEs and PCDPSs varied across different congeners.
