Waste residues have been prepared as biochar (BC) adsorbents to remove sulfonamides (SAs) at low cost, but the mechanisms of the differences in the SA adsorption performance of different BCs are not clear. Thus, the adsorption characteristics of two SAs (sulfadiazine and sulfathiazole) on three BCs derived from waste residues (sewage sludge (SB), pig manure (PB), and rice straw (RB)) were investigated. The results showed that the adsorption mechanism was chemisorption and RB was the preferred BC under the different tested conditions (pH, Ca, and humic acid), followed by PB and SB. To interpret the phenomena, FTIR, XRD, and XPS analyses were performed and results indicated that SB had the lowest C content, and there was a very significant difference in the concentrations of the two O functional groups (C˭O and C‒O) for PB and RB (P < 0.01). Density functional theory calculations revealed that the mechanisms of SA adsorption onto BCs were mainly through π-π electron donor acceptor interactions and H bonds. There was no significant difference in the π interactions between the SAs-BC containing C‒O (BC(OH)) and the SAs-BC containing C˭O (BC(C˭O)), whereas the H bond strength of SAs-BC(OH) was much stronger than that of SAs-BC(C˭O).

The decomposition of residual chitosan-based composite seed coating in kaolin under different temperatures and salinities is analyzed with a Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The degradation cycle is 28 days. The results show that a residue of the chitosan-based composite seed coating still exists in the kaolin on Day 7.

Sustainable alternatives to high environmental input feed ingredients are important to reducing the environmental impact of animal agriculture. Protein and oil extracted from cultivation of black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae (BSFL) on waste feedstocks such as manure, food waste and plant residues could be a suitable source of nutrients. The oil from BFSL contains large amounts of saturated fatty acids, particularly lauric acid, and may be a more sustainable alternative to palm and coconut oils that are currently used in calf milk replacers in many parts of the world.

The biomethanization of lignocellulosic wastes remains an inefficient and complex process due to lignin structures that hinder the hydrolysis step, therefore, some treatments are required. This work describes the addition of an enriched microbial consortium in the biomethanization of rice straw. The experiment was carried out in lab batch reactors following two strategies: (i) pretreatment of rice straw for 48 h using the enriched microbial consortium (dilution 1:100), and (ii) addition of this enriched microbial consortium (dilution 1:100) directly to the anaerobic reactors (bioaugmentation).

Waste-to-energy technologies involve the conversion of several wastes to useful energy forms like biogas and biochar, which include biological and thermochemical processes, as well as the combination of both systems. Assessing the economic and environmental impacts is an important step to integrate sustainability and economic viability at anaerobic digestion systems and its waste management. Energy production, CO emissions, cost analysis, and an overall process evaluation were conducted, relying on findings from both laboratory and pilot-scale experiments.
