We report here a case of human envenoming by Thamnodynastes hypoconia, a common and abundant non-front-fanged snake belonging to the subfamily Dipsadinae. The case was registered in the municipality of Tapes, Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil, in a 27-year-old female. The snakebite was on the wrist of the left arm while handling the snake in a field outing. No pain sensation was noted during the bite, and after 20 minutes edema developed along the hand and forearm with a slight sensation of numbness and mild pain when moving the fingers. After 15 hours, the victim began to develop erythema, paraesthesia, and a sensation of warmth at the bite site. After 30 hours, ecchymosis occurred on the fingers and forearms, and the edema began to decrease. After 70 hours from the time of the bite, ecchymosis along with pruritus and mild pain were still evident. The patient was treated with prescribed medications, and after 7 days no further symptoms were observed. This is the first reported case of envenoming by T. hypoconia.

What do stable isotopes tell us about the trophic ecology of Thamnodynastes hypoconia (Serpentes: Dipsadidae) in southern Brazil?

Snakes are a useful model for ecological studies because they are gape-limited predators that may undergo ontogenetic changes in diet. We analyzed carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios to estimate percent contributions of different prey to snake biomass, trophic positions and isotopic niche width of juveniles and adults of the snake Thamnodynastes hypoconia. We also estimated the isotopic niche overlap between the two age categories.

β-Defensins are cationic antimicrobial peptides showing little sequence similarity but highly conserved tertiary structure stabilized by a six-cysteines-motif. Using a PCR approach, we described β-defensin sequences with two exons in three species of Colubridae snakes with high sequence similarity between them. The deduced amino acid sequence presented the characteristics of β-defensin family.

Reproductive biology of Thamnodynastes hypoconia (Serpentes: Dipsadidae) in Brazilian subtemperate wetlands.

Laboratório de Ecologia de Vertebrados Terrestres, Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos, Avenida Unisinos, 950, 93022-000 São Leopoldo, RS, Brasil.

This study aimed to describe the reproductive biology of populations of Thamnodynastes hypoconia in subtemperate wetlands based on macroscopic analyses of their gonads. We analyzed 101 specimens from the southernmost regions of Brazil. The males had a greater snout-vent length, but the females reached sexual maturity with a greater body size.
