The persistence of , especially in hospital environments where disinfectants are used intensively, is one of the important factors that allow this opportunistic pathogen to establish nosocomial infections. In the present study, we illustrated that . possesses adaptive resistance to the disinfectant benzalkonium chloride (BAC). This BAC adaptation was abolished in the Δ mutant, in which a gene encoding an efflux transporter belonging to the major facilitator superfamily (MFS) was deleted. The Δ mutant also showed increased susceptibility to BAC and chlorhexidine gluconate compared with a parental wild type. The expression of increased upon exposure to quaternary ammonium compounds, including BAC. Thus, the results of this study suggest that plays a role in both adaptive and nonadaptive protection of . from the toxicity of the disinfectant BAC.

Background: Increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) are involved in the pathological process of dry eye disease. Our previous results suggested that norepinephrine (NE) has a protective effect on dry eye.
Purpose: This study explored the potential therapeutic role and underlying mechanisms of NE in benzalkonium chloride (BAC)-induced dry eye disease.

Cationic surface-active agents (CSAAs) can persist in ambient water, be ingested by bees, and contaminate honey. Residues of CSAAs in honey remains unknown. This study measured the residual levels of five CSAAs in 271 honey samples from China using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple-quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry.

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs), ecotoxic organic chemicals linked to multidrug resistance, are being used increasingly, for example to prevent the transmission of infections such as covid-19, in households, hospitals, and industry. To understand the locations, fluctuations, and fractions of QACs entering sewers, we monitored 14 QACs (benzalkonium chloride [BAC]-C8, C10, C12, C14, C16, and C18; dialkyldimethylammonium chloride [DDAC]-C8, C10, and C12; alkyltrimethylammonium chloride [ATAC]-C12, C16, and C18; benzethonium chloride; and cetylpyridinium chloride), and a disinfectant (chlorhexidine) in influent at four Japanese sewage treatment plants (STPs) five times throughout a year. Mass inflows were relatively stable throughout the year, indicating that the recent seasonal covid-19 epidemic did not greatly influence them.

Environmental contamination with biofilm can be a source of healthcare-associated infections. Disinfection with various biocidal active substances is usually the method of choice to remove contamination with biofilm. In this study we tested 13 different disinfection protocols using gaseous ozone, citric acid, and three working concentrations of benzalkonium chloride-based professional disinfecting products on 24-hour-old biofilms formed by two strains on ceramic tiles.

Background/objectives: Eyelid allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) attributed to ophthalmic medications is often underreported, which can result in poor outcomes. Patch testing for eyelid ACD requires up-to-date knowledge of potential allergens. The aim of this study was to investigate allergens in ophthalmic medicaments in New Zealand.
