In this paper, 2 atom % Al-doped ZnO (AZO) was prepared by the co-precipitation method together with sparking plasma sintering (SPS) treatment. The as-synthesized AZO powders show the morphology of hollow hexagonal towers, which result in a high porosity of 50.6% in the bulk sample consolidated by SPS sintering at 400 °C, and the porosity decreases gradually with increasing sintering temperature up to 1000 °C. Positron annihilation measurements reveal that even after sintering at 1000 °C, there are still a considerable number of small pores. A high electrical conductivity of 3 × 10 S m is achieved at room temperature for the AZO sample sintered at 1000 °C, while the absolute values of Seebeck coefficient keep at relatively high values between 59 and 144 μV K in the measurement temperature range of 27-500 °C, leading to a high power factor of 3.4 × 10 W m K. On the other hand, the pores in AZO act as strong phonon scattering centers, and an extremely low thermal conductivity of 1.5 W m K measured at room temperature is obtained for AZO sintered at 400 °C. Due to the residual pores in the 1000 °C-sintered sample, the thermal conductivity is still relatively low. As a result, a maximum of 0.275 measured at 500 °C is obtained in this sample, which is the highest reported for ZnO around this temperature.

Vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) images from bone density machines enable the automated machine learning assessment of abdominal aortic calcification (ML-AAC), a marker of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. The objective of this study was to describe the risk of a major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE, from linked health records) in patients attending routine bone mineral density (BMD) testing and meeting specific criteria based on age, BMD, height loss, or glucocorticoid use have a VFA in the Manitoba Bone Mineral Density Registry. The cohort included 10 250 individuals (mean 75.

Correction Rates and Clinical Outcomes in Hospitalized Adults With Severe Hyponatremia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

JAMA Intern Med

Argentine Cochrane Center, Centro de Investigación de Epidemiología y Salud Pública (CIESP)-Instituto de Efectividad Clínica y Sanitaria (IECS-CONICET), Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Importance: Hyponatremia treatment guidelines recommend limiting the correction of severe hyponatremia during the first 24 hours to prevent osmotic demyelination syndrome (ODS). Recent evidence suggests that slower rates of correction are associated with increased mortality.

Objective: To evaluate the association of sodium correction rates with mortality among hospitalized adults with severe hyponatremia.

Article Synopsis
  • Lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs) are a major global health issue, with pneumonia being a lesser-known but serious concern; treatment options, especially for resistant strains like ESBL-EC, are becoming increasingly limited.
  • The study aimed to investigate the resistance profiles and genetic traits of ESBL-EC strains linked to LRTIs before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, using methods like PCR for detailed analysis.
  • Results showed a decrease in resistance to certain antibiotics during the pandemic, along with increased genetic diversity among bacterial isolates, possibly due to new strains entering hospitals and changes in clinical practices.

Water pollution caused by chromium released from tannery is a serious concern to the environment and public health. Chromium removal from tannery effluent is a crying need before discharging to the surface water. In this study, acrylic acid-grafted sawdust was prepared by Tectona grandis sawdust grafting with acrylic acid employing gamma irradiation in the presence of air and Mohr's salt.

The research focuses on utilizing gamma irradiation to synthesize polyacrylic acid-co-polyacrylamide p(AAm-co-AAc) hydrogels. The effect of synthetic parameters on physicochemical features of p(AAm-co-AAc) hydrogls were examined, including acrylic acid (AAc): acrylamide (AAm) weight ratios, monomer concentration, and gamma irradiation dosage (kGy). At the optimum synthetic conditions (30 kGy and 75% AAc), different chemical modifications are explored to incorporate sulfonate, hydroxyl, carboxyl, cysteine, thiol, and amine functional groups within the bare hydrogel (Cpd 0) structure.
