The histories of the global anti-apartheid struggle, and particularly the British Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM), have predominantly been examined through a transnational and national prism, creating an inaccurate impression of a highly centralized and homogeneous movement. We argue, however, that refining the analysis to focus on the local setting reveals a more complex and diverse movement, which has not been fully captured in the existing scholarship. Using Dundee as a case study, this article charts the emergence, character, and evolution of anti-apartheid sentiment and activity in this small, peripheral industrial Scottish city.

Multiplicity of type 6 secretion system toxins limits the evolution of resistance.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

Division of Evolution, Infection and Genomics, Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health, University of Manchester, Manchester M13 9NT, United Kingdom.

The bacterial type 6 secretion system (T6SS) is a toxin-injecting nanoweapon that mediates competition in plant- and animal-associated microbial communities. Bacteria can evolve de novo resistance against T6SS attacks, but resistance is far from universal in natural communities, suggesting key features of T6SS weaponry may act to limit its evolution. Here, we combine ecoevolutionary modeling and experimental evolution to examine how toxin type and multiplicity in attackers shape resistance evolution in susceptible competitors.

Background: While serial sampling of glioma tissue is rarely performed prior to recurrence, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is an underutilized longitudinal source of candidate glioma biomarkers for understanding therapeutic impacts. However, the impact of key variables to consider in longitudinal CSF samples for monitoring biomarker discovery, including anatomical location and post-surgical changes, remains unknown.

Methods: Aptamer-based proteomics was performed on 147 CSF samples from 74 patients, 71 of whom had grade 2-4 astrocytomas or grade 2-3 oligodendrogliomas.

sp. nov., sp. nov. and sp. nov. isolated from the phyllosphere of litchi.

Key Laboratory of Agricultural Microbiomics and Precision Application (MARA), Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Microbial Culture Collection and Application, Key Laboratory of Agricultural Microbiome (MARA), State Key Laboratory of Applied Microbiology Southern China, Institute of Microbiology, Guangdong Academy of Sciences, Guangzhou 510070, PR China.

Three aerobic, pink-pigmented, Gram-negative, motile and rod-shaped bacterial strains, designated SD21, SI9 and SB2, were isolated from the phyllosphere of healthy litchis collected from three main producing sites of Guangdong Province, PR China. The 16S rRNA gene analysis showed that strains SD21 and SI9 belonged to the genus (.) with the highest similarity to DSM 19563 (98.

Background: An intact blood-brain barrier (BBB) is critical for optimal brain health, and even transient or highly localized disruption of the BBB can have devastating consequences for neural functioning. BBB breakdown has been implicated in Alzheimer's Disease (AD) pathogenesis, and elevated BBB permeability has been observed in APOE e4 carriers compared to non-carriers. As prior studies have focused on a priori, AD-vulnerable regions rather than whole-brain analyses, little is understood about broader patterns of BBB breakdown that may relate to AD risk.
