Introduction And Objectives: Anaesthesia during surgery for moyamoya disease (MMD) has different effects on cerebral physiology. Both sevoflurane and propofol have cerebral protective effects, albeit with different mechanisms. We used near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to observe the effect of sevoflurane and propofol on rSO in paediatric patients undergoing MMD surgery.

Anesthesia for electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) requires proper medications and airway management. Besides an induction agent such as methohexital, a neuromuscular blocker such as succinylcholine (SCh) is often given for muscle relaxation. To maintain the patient's oxygen saturation, mask ventilation is required due to this transient chemical paralysis even in the presence of adequate preoxygenation.

Background: The apnea test (AT) is an important component in the determination of brain death/death by neurologic criteria (BD/DNC) and often entails disconnecting the patient from the ventilator followed by tracheal oxygen insufflation to ensure adequate oxygenation. To rate the test as positive, most international guidelines state that a lack of spontaneous breathing must be demonstrated when the arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO) ≥ 60 mm Hg. However, the loss of positive end-expiratory pressure that is associated with disconnection from the ventilator may cause rapid desaturation.
