We present an approach to determine the absolute thickness profile of flat liquid jets, which takes advantage of the information of thin film interference combined with light absorption, both captured in a single microscopic image. The feasibility of the proposed method is demonstrated on our compact experimental setup used to generate micrometer thin, free-flowing liquid jet sheets upon collision of two identical laminar cylindrical jets. Stable operation was achieved over several hours of the flat jet in vacuum (10 mbar), making the system ideally suitable for soft x-ray photon spectroscopy of liquid solutions. We characterize the flat jet size and thickness generated with two solvents, water and ethanol, employing different flow rates and nozzles of variable sizes. Our results show that a gradient of thickness ranging from a minimal thickness of 2 µm to over 10 µm can be found within the jet surface area. This enables the tunability of the sample thickness in situ, allowing the optimization of the transmitted photon flux for the chosen photon energy and sample. We demonstrate the feasibility of x-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments in transmission mode by measuring at the oxygen K-edge of ethanol. Our characterization method and the description of the experimental setup and its reported performance are expected to expand the range of applications and facilitate the use of flat liquid jets for spectroscopy experiments.

This study employed headspace solid-phase microextraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) for non-targeted metabolomics analyses to examine the impact of mixed fermentation with various lactic acid bacteria (LAB) on the flavor compounds and metabolites of peach and apricot mixed juice (PAMJ), specifically focusing on the alterations of volatile compounds and non-volatile metabolites, as well as their metabolic pathways during the fermentation process. A total of 185 volatiles were identified using HS-SPME-GC-MS analysis, revealing significant differential metabolites, including eugenol, benzaldehyde, and γ-decalactone etc. The results indicated that lactic fermentation significantly enhanced the overall flavor of the juice toward the end of the fermentation process.

We studied the adsorption and thermal behavior of the nitrile-functionalized ionic liquid (IL) [CCNCIm][TfN] on Au(111) and Pt(111) between 150 and 600 K. Ultrathin films were prepared at 150 K by physical vapor deposition (PVD) and were characterized by angle resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS). At 150 K, the IL adsorbs intact with a similar orientation on both surfaces: In the first layer, the so-called wetting layer, the cation lies flat on the surface and the anion is bound in -configuration with the SO groups toward the surface and the CF groups away from the surface.

In this study, we carried out equilibrium molecular dynamics (EMD) simulations of the liquid-liquid (LL) interface between two different Lennard-Jones components with varying miscibility, where we examined the relation between the interfacial tension and the free energy to completely isolate the two liquids using both a mechanical and thermodynamic approach. Using the mechanical approach, we obtained a stress distribution around a quasi-one-dimensional EMD system with a flat LL interface. From the stress distribution, we calculated the LL interfacial tension based on Bakker's equation, which uses the stress anisotropy around the interface, and measured how it varied with miscibility.
