The emanometry test method is one of the detection techniques of radon in water satisfying requirements of Directive 2013/51/Euratom with regards to the detection limit. Quality assurance (QA) procedures were developed and implemented for a measuring system relying on such a technique. These procedures mainly address the following: (i) the assembling of each component of the degassing circuit, (ii) the sample transfer from the transport container to the degassing vessel and (iii) the control of all the influencing quantities. Three identical measuring systems have been used to analyse in parallel 39 water samples with the aim to evaluate the effectiveness of QA procedures in terms of reproducibility. The results showed quite low variability (<15% for the 84% of measurements in the range 10-100 Bq L-1) among the three different measuring systems.

Portable-type electrostatic-collection radon monitors (RAD7) are often used for in-situ measurements of radon in water. In this study, we evaluated the calibration factors and their uncertainties for two RAD7 monitors based on comparative measurements with the liquid scintillation counting method. In the first experiment, we found that both RAD7 monitors had relatively large uncertainties due to leakage of radon gas that bubbled from the gaps between the lids of the desiccant container and the glass vial.

Radon activity concentrations (in water and in air) were measured at 13 selected locations at the Avalon Springs thermal spa resort in Montagu (Western Cape, South Africa) to estimate the associated effective dose received by employees and visitors. A RAD-7 detector (DURRIDGE), based on alpha spectrometry, and electret detectors (E-PERM®Radelec) were used for these radon measurements. The primary source of radon was natural thermal waters from the hot spring, which were pumped to various locations on the resort, and consequently a range of radon in-water analyses were performed.

A robust and straightforward method for on-site determination of radon-222 activity concentrations in water is presented. The methodical approach is based on the principle of liquid-gas-membrane extraction. An extraction module, which consists of hollow polypropylene fibres, allows radon stripping from the water of interest into a connected closed air-loop.

Measurement of radon in water by gamma-ray spectrometry using a HPGe detector has been investigated to determine aquifer characteristics. The radon activity concentration is determined by taking the weighted average of the concentrations derived from gamma-ray lines associated with (214)Pb and (214)Bi decay. The role of accurate radon data to representatively sample aquifers was also investigated by studying a semi-cased borehole.
