We report a dissociative electron attachment study to 2-furoic acid (CHO) isolated in a gas phase, which is a model molecule consisting of a carboxylic group and a furan ring. Dissociation of furan by low energy electrons is accessible only via electronic excited Feshbach resonances at energies of incident electrons above 5 eV. On the other hand, carboxylic acids are well-known to dissociate via attachment of electrons at subexcitation energies. Here we elucidate how the electron and proton transfer reactions induced by carboxylation influence stability of the furan ring. Overlap of the furan and carboxyl π orbitals results in transformation of the nondissociative π resonance of the furan ring to a dissociative resonance. The interpretation of hydrogen transfer reactions is supported by experimental studies of 3-methyl-2-furoic and 5-methyl-2-furoic acids (CHO) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Background: In the era of resistance, the design and search for new "small" molecules with a narrow spectrum of activity that target a protein or enzyme specific to a certain bacterium with high selectivity and minimal side effects remains an urgent problem of medicinal chemistry. In this regard, we developed and successfully implemented a strategy for the search for new hybrid molecules, namely, the not broadly known [2-(3-R-1-[1,2,4]-triazol-5-yl)phenyl]amines. They can act as "building blocks" and allow for the introduction of certain structural motifs into the desired final products in order to enhance the antistaphylococcal effect.

Leishmaniasis is a major public health problem, especially affecting vulnerable populations in tropical and subtropical regions. The disease is endemic in 90 countries, and with millions of people at risk, it is seen as one of the ten most neglected tropical diseases. Current treatments face challenges such as high toxicity, side effects, cost, and growing drug resistance.

Azaaurones are formed by the replacement of intra-cyclic oxygen of the central core of a five-membered furan ring or any other carbon of aurones by a nitrogen atom. However, 1- azaaurone obtained by the replacement of intra-cyclic oxygen is the most prominent and desirable. They are the bioactive compounds acting as potential anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antibacterial, and antiviral agents.

A diversity-oriented collection of furan-2-carboxamides with antibiofilm activity against P. aeruginosa is reported. The design involved the bioisosteric replacement of the labile furanone ring by a furan-2-carboxamide moiety to explore its influence on biological activity.
