Herein, we present an approach for the analytical determination and quantification of semi-permanent hair dyes in wash water samples released during washing of dyed hair employing a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry-selected reaction monitoring (LC-MS/MS-SRM) method with electrospray ionization detection. Specifically, Basic Blue 99 (BB 99), Basic Brown 16 (BB 16), Basic Red 76 (BR 76), Basic Yellow 57 (BY 57) and Acid Violet 43 (AV 43) are hair dyes with properties known to be harmful to human health and the environment. The hair dyes are present in commercial formulation and are discharged into the effluents without fully effective treatment. The detection and quantification by the LC-MS/MS technique show a linear relationship for each studied hair dye in the concentration range from 1 to 200 ng mL in aqueous solution. The limits of detection and quantification were found from 0.66 to 20 ng mL and from 2.0 to 63 ng mL, respectively, values that are compatible with the level required in wash water analysis. The method was applied in samples collected from 5 successive washings of hair dyed with a commercial formulation using the established procedure. BB 99 and BY 57 dyes have lower fixation on the scalp and hair, showing 866 ng mL and 145 ng mL release on the first day of washing, respectively. The accumulation of dye and slow release after washing can lead to future problems for both the environment and living organisms.

Toluene-2,5-diamine sulfate (PTDS), also known as toluene diamine sulfate or 2,5-diaminotoluene sulfate, is an aromatic amine that can be used as a paraphenylenediamine (PPD) hair dye alternative. Patients may develop contact allergy to PTDS, and it is often omitted from standard patch test screening series, possibly leading to underdiagnosis. The American Contact Dermatitis Society named PTDS the Allergen of the Year for 2025, aiming to raise awareness of its dual role as both an allergen and an alternative for some PPD-allergic individuals.

Objective: This research investigated the possible shielding properties of BB (Berberrubine) against the harmful auditory effects of cisplatin, preliminarily delving into the underlying mechanisms responsible for this protection.
Methods: HEI-OC1 cell viability was determined using a Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8). The impact of BB on cochlear hair cells was studied through cochlear explants culture.

Matrix-assisted laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry Imaging (MALDI MSI) is an analytical technique used for the spatial mapping of drugs, explosives, and organic samples, making it a game-changer in Forensic examination. It detects a wide range of biomolecules in their native state without specific tags, antibodies, labels, and dyes. This review aims to highlight the advancement of MALDI-MSI over time and its impact on Forensic Science due to high-resolution molecular imaging.

Background: Henna is a powdered plant material traditionally used for medicinal and cosmetic purposes in Asia and the Mediterranean region. In North America and Europe, however, it is only used to colour the hair and decorate the body. This colouring process is due to the action of the secondary metabolite lawsone, which enables henna to produce orange to red shades of colour.
