Biodegradation of organic compounds would reveal important information on the final fate of a chemical in the environment. However, establishing biodegradability and fate of a chemical is cumbersome. In this scenario, the use of multimedia models help in predicting the fate and half-life of any compound to establish biodegradability. The study commenced with collection of wastewater samples, after primary and secondary treatment, from a Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) treating tannery wastewater. The samples were subjected to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. The GC-MS analysis identified that polyphenolic compounds were detected after biological treatment. The identified compounds emanated from tanning, dyeing, and fatliquoring process of leather making. Estimation Program Interface (EPI) Suite BIOWIN 3 and BIOWIN 4 model prediction revealed that while the primary biodegradation time-frame ranged from days to weeks, the ultimate biodegradation took weeks in the case of all the detected compounds. This study established that BIOWIN model could be used as a screening tool to determine biodegradability of complex chemicals used in tanneries and help to design better treatment facility with enhanced efficiency for removal of polyphenolic compounds. This methodology can also be applied to other industrial wastewaters containing recalcitrant chemicals, and with the help of BIOWIN model, information on biodegradability of chemicals present in the wastewater can be obtained.

The study evaluated the most efficient biological nitrogen removal (BNR) process in four full-scale municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) by using BioWin, a simulation software based on the activated sludge model (ASM). A series of experiments were conducted to determine the kinetic and stoichiometric parameters for the ASM. Results indicated that autotrophic maximum specific growth rates in the studied WWTPs were generally higher compared to previous findings, likely due to their low COD/N ratios, emphasizing the importance of local parameterization.

Objectives: Calcium phosphate-based biomaterials (CaP) are the most widely used biomaterials to enhance bone regeneration in the treatment of alveolar bone deficiencies, cranio-maxillofacial and periodontal infrabony defects, with positive preclinical and clinical results reported. This systematic review aimed to assess the influence of the physicochemical properties of CaP biomaterials on the performance of bone regeneration in preclinical animal models.
Methods: The PubMed, EMBASE and Web of Science databases were searched to retrieve the preclinical studies investigating physicochemical characteristics of CaP biomaterials.

Although biodegradation of organic matter is well-known to trigger enrichment of arsenic (As) in groundwater, the effects of DOM sources and biodegradability on As enrichment remain elusive. In this study, groundwater samples were collected from the Hetao basin to identify DOM source and evaluate biodegradability by using spectral and molecular techniques. Results showed that in the alluvial fan, DOM was mainly sourced from terrestrially derived OM, while DOM in the flat plain was more originated from microbially derived OM.

A biokinetic model based on BioWin's Activated Sludge Digestion Model (ASDM) coupled with a nitrous oxide (NO) model was setup and calibrated for a full-scale wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) Amsterdam West, in the Netherlands. The model was calibrated using one year of continuous data to predict the seasonal variations of NO emissions in the gaseous phase. This, according to our best knowledge, is the most complete full-scale data set used to date for this purpose.

Phage therapy is increasingly put forward as a promising additional tool to help curb the global antimicrobial resistance crisis. However, industrially manufactured phage medicinal products are currently not available on the European Union and United States markets. In addition, it is expected that the business purpose-driven phage products that are supposed to be marketed in the future would mainly target commercially viable bacterial species and clinical indications, using fixed phage cocktails.
