Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Research Program on Cognition & Neuromodulation Based Interventions, Ann Arbor, MI, USA.

Background: The multisite SuperAging Research Initiative (SRI) was established in 2021 to identify resilience and resistance factors promoting cognitive healthspan through a harmonized multidisciplinary protocol with prospective data collection. The designation of SuperAger is reserved for individuals age 80+ with episodic memory performance that is at least average for those 2-3 decades younger. Research studies of this relatively uncommon phenotype allow for investigations of fundamental importance to the neurobiology of brain aging, resilience, resistance, and avoidance of cognitive decline related to "average aging" and more severe impairments associated with Alzheimer's and related dementias (ADRD).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how cancer cells influence the fitness of surrounding tumor microenvironment (TME) cells through a mechanism involving a long non-coding RNA called Tu-Stroma, which alters the expression of Flower isoforms, impacting their growth advantage.
  • The expression of Flower Win isoforms in cancer cells enhances their dominance over TME cells that express Flower Lose isoforms, leading to reduced fitness in the TME.
  • Targeting Flower proteins with a humanized monoclonal antibody in mice has shown promising results, significantly reducing cancer growth and metastasis while improving survival rates and protecting organs from potential lesions.

Development of therapeutic approaches that target specific microglia responses in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is crucial due to the involvement of microglia in ALS progression. Our study identifies the predominant microglia subset in human ALS primary motor cortex and spinal cord as an undifferentiated phenotype with dysregulated respiratory electron transport. Moreover, we find that the interferon response microglia subset is enriched in donors with aggressive disease progression, while a previously described potentially protective microglia phenotype is depleted in ALS.

Non-small-cell lung carcinoma remains a significant health concern due to its high incidence and mortality rates. Traditional medicines play a central role in cancer therapy, with plant-derived bioactive compounds being studied for their potential to offer fewer side effects than conventional treatments. In traditional Kurdish medicine, different species are used to treat burns, inflammation, and other conditions.

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the relationship between physical fitness, executive function, and academic performance in children and adolescents. A total of 131 students (49% female) aged 10-15 years from a public school in Rio de Janeiro were assessed in executive functions (hearts and flowers, Corsi's block, and digit span tasks), academic performance (Portuguese, reading, math, and overall school grade), physical tests (touch test disc, agility, lower limb and upper limb explosive strength), and anthropometric measurements. Regression results showed that the composite of sports-related fitness measures was the best predictor of executive functions (β = 0.
